Know any wanna-be cops who...shouldn't be cops?

There's a guy I know who is all about trying to become a cop, but the dude is seriously like the worst person imaginable to be a cop. Frankly, he's a bullying type but beyond that is very right-wing and seems to take pleasure in forceful measures.

Or are all cops like that?

Everytime he opens his mouth, I can't help but think that in ten years time when he's like firmly up in the command structure of the local PD, he's gonna cost the city a pretty penny in settlement.

So the small-government, military-state type?

Not so much that as the personality. Like, that's ideology, and to a certain extent, you're born into ideology, based on where you're born, the people who surround you while growing up, which you can't control.

But the personality of easy-going or harsh is the real issue.

That's what I am talking about. The type of guy who constantly complains about how the government is suppressing his freedom while he beats the shit out of homeless people who don't consent to a search.

Pretty much anybody who is a cop now, probably shouldn't be a cop.

Yeah! In fact, we shouldn't have any cops at all. All they do is serve the police state!

ATOT is quite funny. For every bad cop you morons post about, there are literally more than 100 good ones.

Now a days, "good" is basically having enough restraint to not tase an old grandma or shoot somebody's "dangerous" dog.

And you are probably right. I bet there are 100 good cops for every asshat cop. But, all it takes is a few rotten apples to spoil the bunch. And that doesn't sit so well when it comes to enforcing laws.

I remember the one time my high school g/f and I, along with her brother got pulled over for speeding. We happened to have a cooler in the back seat. Four cops later, a nice frisking, a phone call to my father from the police letting them know we had, GASP!! unopened beers in the car (that they poured out in front of us, lol) and about an hour of our time, we were finally let go.

Even though they were "just doing their job" they were total dicks to me. One of the cops taunted me the entire time. One thing I don't envy though is being a cop. Just by being one, good or not, you are automatically hated.

How many people do you smile and jump for joy when they have interaction with the police?

In actuality, they weren't "just doing their job" and weren't being dicks. Minor in possession charges could have easily been filed against all 3 of you.

I live in a neighborhood full of cops and the ones I hang out with are pretty nice people. They are generally right-leaning (not all of them), but they don't go on anti-obama rants, or garbage like that, to a room full of people. They're certainly not bullying assholes off the job...at least not to me.

That said, I have no idea what they're like on the job.

It's not illegal to transport beer in that state if you are over the age of 18 (which the brother was).

Also, pretty sure they can't search the car for seeing a cooler. What reasonable suspicion did he have that we had any illegal substances in the car from a cooler? Again, taking advantage of young kids, then being a dick about it.

"Why do you look nervous, punk?? Got something to hide?"

Yeah because that's professional.

Some work desk jobs.

Seriously tho, way too many cops are @sshat like that. And the bigger problem is when the higher-ups are @sshats like that, and you essentially have a roque police force culture thinking they are above the law and can do whatever the fvck they want.

One of the two times I got pulled over for speeding I was in Oklahoma with a Missouri plate. I distinctly remember this good old boy asking what I was doing tearing across "mah city." At that point I had been living and attending college there for a few years, and I had a really hard time not laughing right in his dumb face, but it paid off when he so graciously decided to let me off with a warning.

I could never be a cop; I don't waste others' time, I don't have small man syndrome, and I don't give a shit about people disregarding the letter of the law unless it's causing an actual problem for someone else.

If the 3 of you were under 21 (assuming this didn't happen like 30 years ago, when the drinking age was 18), seeing a cooler in plain sight is reasonable suspicion to look in it. As far as transporting beer? Unless your law specifically states someone different, being in possession of alcohol as a minor is illegal. In fact, many states won't even let servers be under 21. You, and your GF and brother, were breaking a law. They didn't "take advantage" of you. They imposed their own justice (making you dump the beers) rather than following the letter of the law and citing you (resulting in a fine, loss of driver's license, etc).

But I know, despite you breaking the law and being caught, the cops were obviously wrong to give you any kind of penalty...

smackababy, see: good is not nice. Lawful good types can be assholes just like anyone else.

I fail to see how punishing you for committing a crime (you know, upholding the law) is being an asshole in 99.9% of the cases people on this forum cry about. Speed cameras? "OMG police state! I actually get punished it I break the law!!!"

Yes, you clearly fail to see the point of the quoted replies. They're not an asshole because they're enforcing the law, they're an asshole because that's who they are.

You're not even looking at what we're saying specifically, you're trying to lump us in with everyone else who has ever complained about cops or traffic law.

A hypothetical cop: What's that in the back seat? I'm gonna have to search your car ... Oh it's beer, let me see your IDs ... (decision time, asshole y/n)
Asshole: You're all underage, what are you doing with this beer? ... You, what are you fidgeting for, you hiding something else? ... (fucks around for half an hour on the radio, paperwork, hassling the kids) Alright I'm going to let you go, but give me the beer (pours out all the beer one at a time).
Not an asshole: You're all underage, you can't even possess beer. I'm gonna have to confiscate it, and if I catch any of you possessing again you're not going to like what happens. Now get out of here.

Do you see the difference? Both stopped them, searched, confiscated, and let them go, but only one was an asshole about it.

Be glad you got off. Nowadays, PDs get sued if they don't arrest kids for that.

Pouring out beer is bad, but confiscating is good? Also, lol @ "hassling kids" who are illegally transporting alcohol. What's next, nobody was doing anything wrong and you were stopped "for no reason"?

You have proof.....

Let me correct your sentence -- ATOT is quite funny. For every bad cop you morons post about, there are literally 100`s more who look the other way whenever somebodys` rights are being violated!!

My cousin is going for some kind of physical to become a police officer, and silently I wish he fails it due to him being a bible-banger to the extreme.

That, and his education level is on par with a 10th grader AND he has a prior juvenile misdemeanor. TLDR: I don't think cops should come from the "3.0 GPA or under" section of applicant pool.

Cops don't decide how to do their jobs anymore than Target employee's. The police chiefs or their higher ups decide on what sort of "profile" they want the cops to project, and how they want different groups of people treated. Communities get the cops they want, acting the way they want them to act.

Watch the Oscar Grant video's if you want to see people who should not be cops. Zero ability to manage, to project authority short of weapons.

The trouble is that cops like teachers have strong unions that make it hard to keep only the best most suitable people.

Bullshit!

It's not just the bad cops. The bad cops are aided and abetted not only by their department heads and chiefs when they murder/kill a citizen wrongly, beat down a homeless woman, etc., but also by the USSC and other courts who have granted LEO's overly broad interpretations of federal and state constitutional laws.

Add to that the "guilty until proven innocent" attitude of a much larger number of LEOs who don't know the very laws they're meant to enforce when dealing with the public; or who do know the laws and also know just how much they can get away with in areas such as traffic stops, a person's privacy, etc.

I had a frat brother who I'd say was the opposite of that.

He was my 'big brother' when I joined, and the first thing I did was tell him "I smoke some weed now and then" (granted this was college days).

He seemed to be okay with that, or maybe glad I was truthful with him. Last guy you would ever think would want to be a cop.

The thing I'll always remember, is sitting on the front porch of the frat house, and a Cleveland cop car pulls up, and someone says 'is your name *my real name*'. I responded with a Beastie Boys lyric, "no, my name is Clarence".

Great guy. Just thought I'd relate something positive about a cop, even though most of my experiences have been anything but.
