Knoppmyth or Ubuntu + MythTV?

Here's the relevant machine's specs:

MSI K8N S939 Mobo with PCI-E
A64 3500+ Winchester
2x512 Corsair VS RAM
Leadtek 6800GT GPU
Hauppauge PVR-150

So I want to build an HTPC/DVR machine using MythTV. I just recently stumbled upon Knoppmyth that I didn't know existed before. Now, I'm wondering if I should abort my planned Ubuntu + MythTV setup and just install Knoppmyth because it is (allegedly) easier.

I'm not the most savvy Linux user, but I do have some experience. I had a great time rescuing an unused old PIII HP Pavillion by loading Xubuntu on it and setting up a fileserver. I managed to get a software RAID0 going on 3 HDDs, I got Webmin running, Samba, a LAMP stack and Torrentflux without too much trouble, and I even got the drivers properly configured when I installed an old ATI Rage 128 GPU that I picked up for $5 at my local PC shop.

So I guess my question is, are there certain sacrifices I would necessarily make by going ahead with Knoppmyth instead of Ubuntu for the sake of ease? For example, I've been checking out some really cool GUIs using Ubuntu + Beryl and I would kinda like to incorporate that experience, but its not a huge priority. Are there other things like that which I would compromise by going with Knoppmyth?

Thanks
