Knoppix Question...how to change language to US?

I am a complete linux newbie, a couple years ago I installed Turbo Linux that came with my linksys nic card on an old P3 500. The installation went smooth but I had lotsa probs getting the OS to boot in GUI mode. I think I messed up the startup files or something related to it. I plan on getting a linux for dummies book sometime this weekend at barnes & noble. Anyway what would be the easiest version of Linux + GUI to install? SOmething free please (), and know of any good newbie linux books I can get? Thanx mucho for any help.....

Well if you plan on buying a book. Linux for dummies will probably come with redhat install cd's in the back cover! Just go and check out some different books, lots of them will come with cds from various distros. sit their for a hour and see if any of them strike your fancy.

Easiest install has to go to Mandrake with RH a close second.
The dummies books will get you started but if you plan on using Linux for any length of time I'd suggest "Running Linux" by Matt Welsh.
It's an O'Reily book and I think the 4th edition is out.

Most distros seemed to have some problem with the new NV graphic card. Check the Hareware compatible list of the distro that you are intended to install if you are concern with drivers.

I'm not familar with Mandrake, but it should be easy to install & startx. Same thing goes with Knoppix, Suse, RH, Xandros, Lindows, Licoris, ELX, Ark, CollegeLinux, and LinuxInstall.

Knoppix is a good distro to try out, because you can try it out running on CD befor installing it on your system.

Halfway done with Knoppix, burn it and try it out later when I get home. Will it support my Radeon 9500? BTW which versions of linux support FAT32?

Most if not all of them should support fat32. Knoppix r/w to fat/32 & read NTFS.

How do I change the lanuguage to US english? I tried typing "lang = us" but the equal sign won't come out correctly at the command line prompt. I type "knoppix" to boot up in GUI and search all over for the language setting, still no luck. And how do I change refresh rate from 60hz?

Both beta versions that I have boot to English & find the correct refresh rate & optimal screen size for my graphics cards/monitors.

You will have to master the CD image if you want to modify the default X11 config by copy after you edit the XF86config-4 file.

Check the Knoppix forums for the developer guide to remaster the ISO image.

Knoppix normally IS in English.....unless you downloaded the DE (German) ISO. Make sure you download the EN ISO.

If you are typing it in with the spaces first off Don't... If you are booting into KDE go to the System Panel and look through there under Personalization and you will find it change it. I like Knoppix just wish he would hurry up and release the version for HD install with KDE 3.1

IIRC the boot help screen tells you which key is the = key on the german keymap.

Got it to change to english, the "=" symbol was located under shift+0. Now I just gotta figure out how to change the refresh rate.

Yes, even if you boot it knoppix lang=it and install it onto HD, it still boots EN.
The best solution I found was to edit /mnt-system/boot/syslinux/*.cfg and change
sed -i 's/=en /=it /' /mnt-system/boot/syslinux/*.cfg
