If your refering to the bootable linux disc, then I have tried it, somewhat impressed, but I've only used it once or twice on a rather slow PC.

Try the suse 9.1 live CD.... you cant change most of the settings since it runs off the cdrom and its not writable.

3. type: kxconfig

What happens then?

kxconfig runs.

OK config runs and I choose my video card and monitor and I hit quit and it says it needs to restart blah blah, then nothing its still 640x480

Does it need to reboot or just restart X?

You can't expect a whole lot from an OS running off of a cd.

Knoppix is pretty sweet, it easily was the trend setter for live CD's. But pretty much every distro has a live version now. Some are even designed for very specific purposes, and others are made specifc sizes so that they can fit on mini cdr's and small flash drives. Oh, and yes, you can install a live cd and boot from the flash drive. In fact, I suggest this over a CD since it'll load everything a hell of a lot faster.
Here's THE list of Live CD Distros

Good thing you didn't download Cluster Knoppix and make a DC crunching farm because your probably would have died.
