Knoppix boot times? and other ?s

I just burned a CD Knoppix 3.3 and started it in my laptop. Knoppix is running just fine now except that it took 40 minutes to get started. My laptop is a Gateway Solo 5300, 850PIII, 384MB RAM, 20GB HD, 8MB video, 8xDVD/24xCD. On the plus side it automatically logged my wireless card into someones wireless network. This is good because I dont know how to change it to my own with my WEP and stuff quite yet and their DSL is far faster since RR has problems in my area today. Anyway, anything I can do to speed up booting? I mainly want to run Knoppix at work on 1GHz Dell P3s with 256MB of RAM, hopefully it is faster there. Next question, at work I would like to be able to store files, but cant on the computer. I was going to buy a 256MB USB pendrive to use with Knoppix to store stuff. Will it work?

Thanks,
Brian

The USB pen will work & same as CD burner if your lappy have one. As for boot time...Knoppix consitently boot up at around 2 minutes for me on K6, Duron, Cyrix, Athlon, Celeron, P2, P3 & P4 workstations/laptops.

Can't do that at work where I wan to use Knoppix since it purges the HDs everyday. For the laptop though do I have to do anything to make it use the HD instead of the CD?

I tried it on my desktop and it seemed decent, but a bit delayed.

Thanks for the idea. When I tried copying it I got a CRC error. The cd was apparently bad. Burned a new copy and it booted on the laptop in under 2 minutes. So, do I have to do anything to run it like you said?

Thanks,
Brian

If you copy the CD's \KNOPPIX directory to the root directory of any partition, it can be run from there. You will have to make a boot floppy or CD with the boot.img file inside of that \KNOPPIX direcotry. Given that most any hard drive is faster than the fastest CD/DVD drive, KNOPPIX will fly!

Burn a DVD. This will reduce your seek times somewhat because the image will occupy a smaller space and your transfer rates may be 3x faster if you have a fast DVD-ROM. And use a mini-dvd because it has less rotational inertia. But of course, this will still be slower than a HD install.
