vs starting for the knicks??

he obviously wasn't going to come off the bench for the knicks, bt given the opportunity to come off the bench for the spurs he took it.

which do you think he prefers??

I think he prefers to adjust accordingly to the team that will most likely give him a ring.

If he has to come off the bench to get a ring, then he'll do it...

if he's a starter to get a ring, he'll do that too.

Well he's been a starter for the Knicks for ages now. I'm guessing he's itching for a ring.

charlie ward? does he really deserve his own thread? That's like starting a thread asking if tony battie prefers to start or come off the bench!

I think the overall discussion of play a lot for a crappy team vs play less with a chance at the title is valid - there are too many big-time athletes who would choose the first option, and do, than go for the ring.....

thank you.

i thought it was interesting and that charlie ward was a good example. he could have started for some of the teams at the bottom of the league, NJ wanted him also, but i think he made the right decision going with the spurs, i wouldn't be surprised if he turned down more money somewhere else to go to the spurs and have a realistic shot at the ring.

I heard an interview with him when he came back to NY with the Spurs. He did say that it is much easier to play for the Spurs, less pressure. In NY every year there were always trade rumors swirling and his role wasn't always defined. He could be the starter, he could come off the bench, he might be part of platoon. He's averaged 23 minutes a game for his career. That and his calm personality would seem to indicate that he would be happy most anywhere and thankful as well. The once, "Best quarterback in NY", was a good worker, was a decent defender and could stick an occasional three.

he'll do what he needs to in order to get a ring. whether he likes to start or not - i think everyone in the nba would love to start - so no, he doesnt prefer coming off the bench, but he realizes the talent thats on the team.

He won the Heisman but I don't know where he would have been drafted by the NFL if at all. He was a first rounder for the Knicks and he has lasted ten years in NY. I looked up his career stats and they were lower than I would have guessed and I wasn't estimating that they were all that high. But to last ten years in this town and with all the abuse he took proves that he at least some fortitude.

Of course, none of that answers your question.
I'd say he made the right choice. I don't know much of his college career and I don't know if anyone would have been singing his praises in the NFL. Chances are that he would have been drafted eventually and ended up as the third string quarterback for a few years before disappearing all together.

He's lasted ten years in the NBA and all, up until this year, for the same team. He's made a lot of money and has been the point guard of a team that used to regularly make the playoffs and he has been to the Finals.

I think he made the right choice.

AND he kept alive the legacy of being potentially a great NFL player. if he had gone to the NFL i doubt many people would have commented on his potential NBA career.

I think he's happy just to still be playing in the NBA.

he wouldn't have been starting for the knicks, esp with marbury.
even w/out marbury, they were constantly rotating the starting PG trying to look for the best chemistry.
