hey guys check this out:
klipsch just redesigned their speaker systems!
they made the satalites have a higher wattage and the sub lower...

Klipsch before:
2.1(mine): 2(35w sat) + 130w sub
4.1: 4(60w sat) + 160w sub
5.1: 5(60w sat) + 200w sub
(ref. 3dsoundsurge.com for reiviews of old sets)

Kiipsch now:
2.1: 2(55w sat) + 50w sub
4.1: 4(80w sat) + 70w sub
5.1: 5(60w sat) + 170w sub
(ref. klipsch.com for new specs)

HUGE DIIFFERENCE!!!
i'm quite disappointed, since i can't make 4.2 unless i go used.
also, look at all the bass taken out of the 4.1's and 2.1's

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!!!

Opinions?

Relying on those power ratings for any meaningful decision or comparison is dumb and a waste of time and energy. You can measure power an infinite number of ways and come up with an infinite number of ratings. Forget about it.

To parphrase, "it's not the size of the watts but the magic in them"

New sub is 70W, not 160W.

It is meaningless to speculate until you hear them. Perhaps Klipsch made their sub more efficient. It wouldn't be too much of a change since the same speaker driven by 160w is only 3 or 4 db louder than with 70w.

I had half a page written up about acoustic efficency, power handling of various order subwoofers, driver sensitivity, and even a little blurb about masking. I was gonna be a tool and try to show off a little of what I know about acoustics just for the hella of it.

Then I realized that no matter what, people will always buy the 100Watt speakers before the 75Watt speakers.

No matter what you tell them.

It's like the 9th law of thermodynamic's.

The power ratings are largely irrelevant compared to how the system sounds. I'd bet that the new, lower specced ones sound just as great as the old ones.
I'm also willing to bet that all of the klipsch subs, good as they are, would be considerably quiter and less punchy than a decent hi-fi sub rated at 100W. In the end, power ratings are largely irrelevant as they are dependant on so many other factors. The Klipsches do a great job for their intended market regardless of their specs.

maybe they didnt change their speakers at all, just their way of measuring their wattage ...

That's entirely possible, IMHO...
I'd be interested to see a detailed comparison of the specs before and after. It's also possible that they've moved the crossover point slightly lower and have beefed up the sattelites a little to cope.

One of Paul Klipsch's favorite lines was "All anyone needs is a good 5W amplifier".

Of course, he certainly wasn't referring to crappy computer "multimedia" speakers! :Q

Times change, and I guess you have to go where the money is.

The Theatre/Pro/Reinforcement industry is still going though...

Cheers!

4.2 Is a complete gimick and money grab meant for "My johnson is bigger then yours" type people who think they have to have and actually think they are getting "the best/biggest". If you went for it then you wasted money and if you're still trying to get there then you likely haven't done any reading and/or personal testing before making your purchase/choice and deserve to waste your money. As long as the Sub is properly placed all you need is 1 ('specially in a system where you can control the volume of the sub seperate from the Sats).

actually it allows me to have similar, quality/power as the 4.1 system.
unfortunately i didnt have the money at the time so the reason for the 4.2 was so that i could buy just the 2.1s to hold me over till i graduated.
it wasn't meant to be a bragging thing.
and trust me there are much better setups out there.
i know the 2 subs are no better than the 4.1s one...
but as i said before, my decision was not based on # of subs

I also would pretty much ignore the wattage rating. For most of Klipsch's history they have produced speakers that need little power. As a matter of fact many are insanely effecient My KLF-20s are around 100dB @ 1 watt/1 meter. Granted there is a big difference between something like the ProMedias and full range/full size speakers. But listening to how they sound is what you should care about and not the power ratings.

Oh ok now I see what you are/were getting at. You didn't state in your original post that you already had a 2.1 system and wanted to add a second 2.1 system thus comming up with a 4.2 system (for the reasons that you've now made clear). (I never look at those HUGE long SIGs ... wish everyone would learn to use the nice SysRig setup that Anand/Zuni built us).

LOL! Yup. My home theater setup uses 60w speakers for front and rear, 80w for center. They happen to be very nice speakers and put out more clear sound than the room needs. It's all about a balance of the parts.
