Klipsch Promedias *POUND* the house..... but what about the soundcard?

I have the 4 speaker Klipsch system and a Sound Blaster Live value card. Do you think I would have better sound quality with the Live Platinum card or does the Value do the exact same thing?

With the platinum you get a live drive (which gives you knobs to control settings, but nothing that you cant do in software) and a value card. Thats it. The only difference between the MP3+ and X-Gamer is the software package also.

sorry to break this to ya LXi, but even the 5.1 series uses the same exact soundboard as the original live and live! value... just an extra useless plug and added software support for dd 5.1 decoding which sucks IMO.

More information on the Philips Acoustic Edge:

"Like most top 3D sound cards today, the Acoustic Edge supports numerous simultaneous 3D sound streams (96), and also supports every current 3D sound API: DirectSound3D, A3D 1.0, EAX 1.0 and 2.0, and I3DS2. Using QSound's 3D algorithms, the Acoustic Edge is one of the few sound cards to offer gaming 3D sound output to a six channel or 5.1 speaker system (four speakers, a subwoofer, and a center channel). While the 5.1 output isn't considerably better than a traditional four speaker output, it is still a step in the right direction."

Worth watching, anyway. Thanks for the heads-up on the 3dss.com article, Zucchini.

I heard that it's got a revised version of the EMU10K chip, with true hardware 5.1 support.

I just replaced my SB Live! Platnium 5.1 with the Philips Acoustic Edge and it is much better than the SB card. The Thunderbird DSP on the Philips card is the only card that can output 5.1 sound from any stereo source, whether or not it is encoded for it. The live drive does offer more connectivity, but I never used it. This card also produces sounds more accurately than the SB card, and I can even play my games in A3D 2.0 even thought the card supposedly does not support it. It sounds so good with my Promedia's that I might pick up the 2.1 PM's and make a 6.2 system.....that should wake the neighbors for sure..:Q
