Hello. As part of my next upgrade I am thinkign about upgrading my speaker setup for my PC from these pretty bad Altec Lansing ones to the Klipsch Promedia range. I am debating whether it will be worth going for the 5.1 sets. I do not watch DVDs on my PC and never plan to do so, will future games support Dolby Digital 5.1? Also, what current cound card would really give justice to these speakers?

If you decide not to go with 5.1, then seriously consider the Logitech Z-560 speakers. They perform comparably to the Promedia, but cost around half as much.

I have the kiplish 2.1 and I'll be selling them and buying the 5.1 I don't watch too many dvd's on my computer, but playing a game like Undying, Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Dues Ex 2 would be awesome with the 5.1 setup.

Future games should support Dolby Digital 5.1 I don't see why they shouldn't. Especially sound eccentric games such as Thief 3 or Dues Ex 2.

I just got the Audigy Xgamer for $85 at mwave.com And this sound card from creative is awesome. And this card supports 5.1 dolby digital surround sound.

P.S. Klipsch a couple of months back were having problems with there 5.1 setup, so they disscountinued that series for a little bit. In fact, my 2.1's had to go back to kiplish because the left speaker crapped out on me. They are repairng it though, but it will take 3 weeks until I get the speakers back.

get 4.1 speakers if you dont plan on dvd.. and i second the z560's.. i've owned both pairs.. and they perform equally... and i got my z560's for 140 shipped..

I love my promedia 5.1's

I don't watch too many dvd's but even for music and stuff if you set it up right it sounds sooo good... oh btw hope you don't live in a apartment cause the bass on these things are killer!

I would rather suggest you properly position your current speakers to give you a better soundstage/imaging, save your money for stuff like that X15 you've been waiting for

I've owned the Klipsch Promedia v.2-400, 4.1, and 5.1's ... I've been very happy with all 3 sets.

The Klipsch 5.1 has the advantage of having a larger subwoofer than the 4.1's (Dual 8" @ 200 watts RMS versus Dual 6 1/4" @ 160 watts). Plus the Satellites are supposed to be of higher quality than the 4.1's (I don't notice that they sound better or anything though).

Many games already take advantage of 5.1, and DirectSound 3D has the ability to do 5.1...

Just remember that the Klipsch 5.1 cannot do any sort of decoding. That is, it simply has 5.1 channel analog inputs... You need a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder to get any sortof surround sound from a DVD. Most PC games don't use any sort of encoding, they simply use DirectSound 3D or something similar which would be output in 5.1 analog channels by your soundcard anyway (assuming your soundcard supports 5.1) ... The SB Live! 5.1 and SB Audigy both support Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding in software, and I'd assume Nvidia's new MCP supports 5.1 decoding in software too (but dont quote me on that). Additionally, with the new PowerDVD XP v4.0 you get support for DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding in software (plus Dolby Pro Logic II encoding for "converting" 2-channel stereo sources like MP3s and Audio CDs to 5.1!)

In any case, games certainly can and will be taking advantage of 5.1 ... and I don't think you'll be disappointed with the incredible sound that the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's put out ... Even though there is a price premium on the 5.1's, they are probably the best PC speakers you can buy right now.

If you want a 5.1 system, go for the Promedia's.... Ive heard the 5.1's, the 4.1's, i own the v2-400's, and ive heard the Z560's.... For the price, you cant beat the z560's, but they do not sound as good as their klipsch counterparts. Yes, they are terrific for their price range and they do come close, but they are no klipsch. As for the Klipsch 5.1's, THEY ARE AMAZING!!!! I plan to pick up a set sometime next year to replace my still capable, yet aging v2-400's....

In conclusion, if you want the best, GO FOR THE KLIPSCH 5.1's... Ive had my v2-400's for about 2 1/2 years now and it is STILL the best money i've ever spent on my system. You wont be sorry...
