Klipsch Promedia 2.1s sounds lifeless. Please recommend something better.

I bought a set recently based on a lot of reviews. The base is strong for movies rap and some electronic. I don't think they sound warm or musical for other types of music though. It's to a point where I prefer to stick my Grado SR-80s into the port and listen to the headphones while they are on the table over the klipsch. Can anyone recommend a set of warm sounding speakers?

Well, you'll almost certainly have to look beyond computer speakers to achieve what you want. Part of the problem is that you are comparing them to headphones (which happen to have a very distinct sound character). This is important because headphones tend to achieve a higher quality sound for a lower price (up to a certain point). Those are some well liked headphones and so it isn't surprising that you like their sound compared to computer speakers (even ones as well liked and praised as the Klipsch).

I'm not familiar with what brands sound like what and things like that in speakers, so I don't think I can help much, but YoYo will surely be by to give some assistance (as well as some others). I don't know that you'll be able to achieve a similar sound to the Grados in speakers without spending a pretty fair amount though.

those are probably the only decent "computer" speakers out right now. You might want to consider a receiver + some bookshelfs or other type of speakers. also make sure you have a decent sound card if you are interested in music listening. emu 0404 usb is a good recommendation for <$200, others would be x-fi elite pro if you need a compromise for gaming, or xtreme music if you want one that's cheaper- you can mod the xtreme music to be a premium audiophile card if you know how to solder and stuff.

the Auzentech cards are the same as the XFIs but you can replace the DACs without soldering you can just pop them in and out

the only speakers better are prob the Swan M200s which are sold as computer speakers but arnt really computer speakers

I'd recommend the Sirocco Crossfires but I'm pretty sure you can't buy them anymore.

Klipsch has never been described as "warm" speaker company. The horns they use have always been pretty harsh and too bright for me.

Indeed.

"Warm" is often used to describe the X-LS speakers that I'm using for my work setup. Klipsch is too bright for me and I prefer something a little laid-back.

As others have said, you're probably going to be looking at beyond computer speakers to get something comparable to a decent set of headphones. Even low cost speakers like I have aren't going to compete with what you can get with your headphones. You'd have to spend several times the Promedia budget to get something really good.

Check out the "Auditioning" section in here and then go out and check out some different options to see what kind of general sound you're looking for.

You should also be able to get a feel for whether a set of bookshelf speakers on its own is going to be enough "base" ;) output for you or if you're going to need a subwoofer in addition.

LOL do those HF drivers in the promedia's even qualify as a horn?

Opt for a pair of powered studio monitors. They will give much more faithful sound.

The grado headphones are pretty bright in their own right, but they do have a warmer upperbass/midrange, and this could be explained due to the klipsch having a higher crossover from speaker to subwoofer (120hz-150hz) and a few other misc. reasons that are not an issue with the headphones. Computer speakers will *never* obtain the smooth upper bass/lower midrange/midrange as a larger bookshelf speaker because of this (and also because the computer speakers have such tiny mid-bass drivers). The swan's M200 is a good "in-between" solution if you cannot or don't want to get a separate preamp/amp unit(s). Any other "active monitors" from your typical guitar center (e.g. sweetwater.com) will do the trick as they come with their own amplification. As mentioned above, check out Yoyo's stickied thread for more details and a better idea of what you "need".

I second the swan speakers.
I personally have a set of swans with a velodyne vx10 subwoofer.
I bought my gf a set of klipsch 2.1's, and I listened to them first side by side to my swans. As good as the klipsch sounds, they still don't compare to the swans. The small drivers just lacks the oomph the much larger bookshelves like the swan provides.

You're getting very close to the top of the line computer speaker sets, so although a receiver/real speaker set is not your only option (yeah, powered monitors would be a good option as well), I don't think any computer speakers are going to satisfy you.

I haven't heard the grados and even if I had, I think I'd have a hard time telling you anything specific to check out.

To find speakers you like I went through some things you can do in my thread you linked to.

I think the best options are

-Go out to some "real" audio stores and check out what they have to offer
-Order a couple pairs of your best guess for ID speakers you'd like and demo them in person

Near-field listening adds both positive and negative factors for listening to speakers too, and not all speakers are going to be well suited for it.

You may want to use a better audio source to judge your speaker quality as well....But as for what you need is just to upgrade to a recev. setup if you want a better sound then the klipsch promedias not much better in the line of computer speakers....

And of course if you get M200s / studio monitors / bookshelf speakers, you're going to have to make some room on your desk ;)
