Klipsch 4.1 or a set of expensive Stereo speakers?

Let's say I wanted to get the same functionality (not necessarily quality) as the Klipsch 4.1 provides. Can I buy 4 speakers and a powered Sub and just hook them up to the Game Theater XP?

I can probably buy very high quality, expensive speakers and a Sub for $300 that the Klipsch costs.. Or does it have some additional input/connectors that make it easy (or possible at all) to connect to a sound card?

Since the Klipsch are computer speakers, they have a built-in amp. You couldn't use speakers hooked up directly to the GTXP (or any sound card), you'd need an amp, or more likely a Dolby Digital receiver if you want 4.1 sound, to power them.

Do you have a budget? If it is $300.00 or so, I'd say go with the Klipsch 4.1's or the BA4800's (and buy another component for your comp 😉 ) since I highly doubt you can get 4 speakers and a powered Sub and a amp/receiver (to connect to the sound card) for $300.00 which are as good as the Klipsch 4.1's.

Just my thought. 😉

I am using a set of Aiwa speakers w/ subwoofer for making music. Have them sitting on a shelf right above the monitor. I also have a pair of desktop speakers...Altec Lansing 2 piece. Why not have both if moneys not an issue.

One thing to be careful of with regular speakers is that most of them are not mag sheilded while most computer speakers are (how well? who knows but thats another question) your monitor primarily will be affected if you put regular non shielded speakers close to them... or any powered subwoofer (saw it firsthand with a labtech sub).. so be careful and plan well.. 🙂

Peace all

Sorry for the double post...
My multimedia computer is using a MX300 sound card (excellent card btw) with a regular sony ministereo system as front and a set of regular computer speakers (powered of course) as rear, for an effective 4 piece speaker system... i believe its pretty good compared to my speaker system i got for my gaming rig (Altec Lansing ACS54 4.1 + sound blaster Live)... the sony system gives great sound with plenty of bass (the kind that gets my neighbor knowcking at my front door... 😉 )
