Klinux question

Assuming that I will be using Klinux will I need to be concerned with driver support when purchasing/selecting a NIC or graphics card?

NIC yes, graphics, no. It works with any VGA card. I don't know about the standard distro (Kilowatt will have to answer) but my custom version supports SMC, Realtek and NE2000 NICs.

Klinux and Duron 700@1000 * 6 - should be a good little crack rack.
Duron 700 - $91
Duron 700@1000 - 3.65Mkeys/sec

Klinux v1.2
NE2000, Realtek 8029/8029AS/8039 based cards
(note: Realtek 8019 based cards aren't supported)
Linksys LNE100TX (not tested, but Netgear 10/100 should be OK)
Macroics/MX based, SOHOWare Fast 10/100, CNet 10/100 Pro 120,
and most SMC, and other tulip based Network Cards.

Klinux v1.3
Most 3Com, HP PCLAN, EtherExpress & EtherWorks Network Cards.

Get yourself either a Realtek based, or something you know runs with the tulip drivers.
The Cnet 120 Pro's are a good cheap 10/100 choice.

Thanks Kilowatt. I'm sure I will have more questions before this little project is complete.

One thing of note: It does not support the Realtek 8139B, which is the one that is now commonly in circulation.

Kilowatt,

If you want to add the 8139B and you need one for testing, just let me know and I'll send you one. They're dirt cheap ($8 a crack) and reliable, so I think it's probably going to be showing up on a lot of racks. Besides, Freesco supports it, and you wouldn't want the competition to get ahead of you.😀

Wisecom 10/100 Base-T PCI w/Realtek Chipset - How do I know from such a description if this Realtek chipset is one of the supported versions of Realtek? This came from z-buy.com. They have them at $7 each.

Just looked it up Russ, seems it uses a differant (New) driver altogether.
It needs rtl8139.o driver in Linux. Hmmm....Just a sec.....

OK,
The driver is included with the Mandrake 7.1 distro. (/lib/modules/kernel#/net/rtl8139.o)
Thats the distro I compiled the kernel in for Klinux.
I beleive it must of been what they considered an Experimintal driver, I left those out.

Yeah Russ if you want to send one, I'll send it back when I'm done.

Maybe while I'm at it, I should ask People what nics they want supported.

Kilowatt,

eMail me your address, I'll get one out. No need to send it back at all. I have a buttload of them.🙂

RC,

Wisecom is out of the NIC business, so I'd assume they wouldn't be the latest; probably the 8029 in PCI.
