You would need a receiver with Dolby Digital 5.1 capabilities to truly take advantage of the surround sound speaker setup.

Any good deals on a decent receiver? Doesn't necessarily have to be top of the line since these are just a value buy.

Hmm, it says the speakers can handle 60w. (100w if wired through the subwoofer...not sure how that works). Even the cheap Dolby Digital receivers I've seen put out 80wx5, so make sure you get one that's really low-powered. Or find out more about the wiring through the subwoofer.

Also, this has a passive subwoofer. Does that mean it doesn't have its own power source? The minimum for home theatre subs seems to be 50w, with the norm being 100w and up. Even my computer subwoofer is 15w. As long as it works though, it's better than no sub.

Every now and then, the typical electronics chain (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) will have a Dolby Digital receiver (brands like Aiwa or Sherwood) for as low as $119.

not a bad deal if you are just starting out. I am looking to get rid of my Bose 301 bookshelves, to replace with some sattelites and sub. I currently have KLH brand for my center and rear channels, no sub though. Honestly I can't tell the difference in quality between the two brands, but then again they are completely different speakers for different things.

I got this system home, and it requires a thing called a receiver to hook it up, which costs [extra]... So unless you got a receiver I suggest you not buy this...

With a passive sub, you guys can NOT connect this to the sub output of an HT receiver. The sub is designed to be wired in with the mains. In other words, take front left/right speaker output from receiver and go to sub. Take front left/right sats and wire to sub. Now, when music is played to front left/right, lows are played through the sub and highs through the sats. Even if you have a receiver that can redirect LFE to your mains, I'd venture to guess that those Bose 301's sound better than this setup.

Don't worry about their power handling if you plan to use the pair of surround speaker.

Is the whole system free or just the 3-piece center channel speaker and the 2 front/rears? If its in the ad its just the 3-piece.

For $60.98 after shipping for the whole system including the sub, is a great price. The system is not the best in the world, but it would definitely be better than just your tv.

There a ton of great dolby recievers that you can by used at places like eBay. If you get a low quality set of speakers like these, a nice expensive amp isn't going to help much. Also, to run this you only need a dolby pro-logic receiver, you DO NOT need a DIGITAL dolby pro-logic receiver. A digital is nicer, but a lot more expensive. Happy hunting.

Keep in mind that you CAN'T just hook this up to your TV. You need some sort of amplification, they're not like PC speakers. Most people will use a stereo or HT receiver. For $61, you probably couldn't buy 5 speakers so in that respect, this isn't a bad deal. But my point is that for anyone that thinks they're getting a sub for their home theater, they are dead wrong. The sub is just there to make the sats sound full range. Even with the sub, good quality bookshelfs would likely sound much better. The only problem, how can you buy 5 good quality bookshelf speakers for $61 .
