I bought these for $16 on Black Friday. I'm far from an audiophile, but they seem pretty good. They haven't exploded on me yet.

These are probably better than the single-driver crap that comes with most home-theater-in-a-box systems; pick up 3 pair and a cheap sub at Costco or Sams, plus an inexpensive HT receiver and you'll be much better off.

FWIW, reviews on audioreview.com are mostly favorable. You'll definitely need a sub for any serious listening, though. And keep them away from your CRT; apparently the shielding is not that good.

the only thing i really expect from klh is low prices. these are ok for $20 if you need cheap sound somewhere. certainly not the best in sound quality or efficiency. the 3-way klh's for $20 were a nicer deal i think. but yeah, great for a workshop/garage/etc

Compared to nothing. All they are saying is that they are pleased with them. They do their job well enough that they don't bring attention to themselves.

as with most equipment regardless of price it may sound good a low volume, but the truth comes out when you pump up the volume and any cheap speaker will just stop sounding nice

I had their satellite system a few years ago - it was decent - you get what you pay for - and I agree - for a place where sound quality is not important, such as using them in the yard or garage where because of ambiance noise it won't matter, then they are ok.

I could use them as sorounds in Ht system, but even then....

Good find tho

Putting an RTA to these in room shows that they have a very ragged response that changes greatly with volume. They are rated at 80Hz - 20kHz (with no qualifier), but there's a large drop for half of the top octave, and are already 8db down at 80Hz on the low end. If one were extremely money-challenged, you could buy these and add an active or passive filter at 120Hz, then use them with a subwoofer and crank the treble control on your source a little. Since they tend to be very directional, they might work well in a small home theater set-up, but no so good in a pure stereo listening environment.

I'd have to think that the time you took to do this was probably worth more than the speakers themselves. :p

I would guess that these sound better than, say, clock radio/boom box speakers. Probably on par with cheap mini-shelf system speakers. That said, they're probably worth the $20. Lets compare B&Ws and Paradigms to B&Ws and Paradigms and compare the KLHs to KLH-like products. :)

I picked up a pair of the KLH L853B 3-way speakers at Best Buy a while back for $20 for the pair. I considered it an incredible deal since I'm just using them for surround speakers. I'll probably pick up another pair the next time I see them on sale.
