KK266 slow secondary IDE

The tranfer speed on the secondary ide of my KK266 appears to be very slow. I have a cd burner as secondary master. It won't burn at greater than 4X without burnproof and with burnproof on a 12X cd takes 25 minutes, longer than if I did 4X because of constant buffer underrun.

If I switch the drive to primary slave then the speed is much better and I can burn fine, but I have a DVD that I would prefer to be primary slave and the DVD is also slower on the secondary channel.

I originally had the 307 bios running default w2k drivers. Upgraded to 426 to see if it would help, but it did not, so I installed via 4in1 4.32 to see if it would help and still have the same problem.

Sandra benches the CD drives when they are secondary master as about 1X, but they bench close to rated speed when primary slave.

Has anybody seen this problem before or know of any solutions?

what is your secondary master?

most times its a good idea for the burner to be a master not a slave, cdrom/dvdrom do fine as slaves

I have three drives total. Primary master is a HD. Primary slave is a DVD. Secondary master is the CDRW. No secondary slave. Burner burns fine when primary slave (other than having high chance of buffer underrun when programs are launched), but fails when it is secondary master. I would like the CDRW to work as secondary master since this would give it better priority than when it is a slave drive to the HD.

ahhh i misread your origional post

if you have the harddrive alone on the primary
and on the secondary have the burner as master the dvd as slave

that should speed you up.

Yep, DMA is enabled on all drives. I'm pretty much giving up hope of having the CDRW work as secondary master now and have put it as the primary slave. The DVD is secondary master now. I hope the DVD does not end up exhibiting the same problems. Funny thing is that I can extract audio from the CDRW at 20X and copy files at 24X+ speed when it is secondary master, but can't burn to it at anything above 4X. Maybe it is some weird Nero compatibilty problem, but I had the same drive as secondary master on a 440bx system and it was fine, so I am thinking this has something to do with VIA's faulty 686b implementation of the secondary IDE channel.
