Kitten Teething!!!

he is constantly attacking them!
although, this might just be him playing with me.
but recently ive noticed that he like ti gnaw on my fingers, especially the back of his mouth. i try to rub his gums there a little and that generally gets him purring but he has been crying a lot and i think he is in teething pain.
(i used pencils on my very first kitten and she loved it. this one, not so much.)

any cat lovers here got some advice?

Get the "Squeaky mice" covered in fur and other toys as deterrents - but unfortunately, you're "Mom" to the kitten, and as such he's going to nip and bite you.

Bite him back.

heh j/k. Anyway, I'm not sure. My brother had to start closing his bedroom door at night because his kittens climb on the bed and bite them and play and such. But it doesn't usually hurt when they nibble your fingers so I always let them do that...

 catnip is your friend

Catnip will make them riled up and more likely to bite probably.

I assume the kitten is neutered?

Seems like it may need play therapy. Get a dangling feather toy or similar and play with him for about 15 minutes at a time a few times a day.

Also, don't use any sort of punishment, it may just get him confused and scared.

No, no, no. I specifically suggested mice with squeakers for that reason. Kittens are not supposed to have catnip until at least 6 months of age.

Yeah, would you give a 3 year old weed?

The biggest reason not to give kittens catnip is that it has no affect on them. Not until they mature does catnip has it's spicy affect on them.

Even then some cats don't react to it. I'd definitely avoid it for a kitten. In addition to the other reasons, I'm not too sure if a kitten would know when to stop, like adult cats do.

Here you go.

Like humans, your kitten may experience discomfort and pain while she is in her early teething stages. You may find her chewing on undesireable objects and oftentimes, she may use you as a chewing toy. Be pateint with her during these stages, and provide her with soft, rubber chew toys, provide a high quality kitten food, and start early on with regular vet check-ups to ensure good oral health.

If you should ever notice your kitten having an extremely difficult time eating, or that she doesn't eat, or that pain seems to overwhelm her, please have her checked with your vet immediately.

Sometimes, teeth can grow in a way that promotes overcrowding, an overbite or other oral problems that make it difficult on your kitten. Getting an early start on her oral care and working with your vet can ensure optimum future oral health.

PICS please 🙂

Also, you may try using a spraybottle and spray a lil water on her head everytime she bites you hard 😉

Remember, kittens also bite as a sign of affection though. If you squirt him everytime he play-nips you, that's going to confuse, scare, and piss him off in that order.

He's probably just being an attention whore though. Play with the little hairball. 😀

And oh yeah,

PICS please 🙂

I have had several kittens, if you don't let them bite your ears, nose, hands and that is pretty important, NEVER let them use your hands as toys, they will find other things to bite and gnaw on, preferably things that you provide for them. Pencils can be a bit hard for aching gums, try something made of medium hard rubber instead.

Only cats that are affectionate towards humans. I'll pass on the "runs like hell if anyone at all enters the room" or "spends 22 hours a day sleeping and the rest mauling furniture" hellspawn. 😛

Fiancee's roommate's cat linked above, btw.

actually, no. the kitten is not yet been....altered.
he will be soon but he is still sort of young and becuase he was a foundling (sitting outside my window at 1 week old) ive spent the month trying to get him up to normal weight, have him start eating on his own, etc etc. im going to take him for surgery soon.
and yeah, the bites dont usually hurt. or they didnt. but his crying and the more forceful bites lead me to believe he is teething, not just playing. besides, when im asleep, even the most gentle nibbles can scare the crap out of one.
and when you are in that moment right before sleep and get bitten. oy. it hurts like getting marrow sucked.

theres a pic for you.

there is another, less bitey picture for you.

this isnt my first kitten, its just the first one that wanted to bite so much. it IS my first male kitten, i must admit. i hear they calm down a bit after surgery. he has been very good about his claws and he has stopped trying to nurse off me.
i play with him basically all day. he has much more energy than my oldest cat (who likes to play with him) so...we take turns getting worn out.
i dont punish him becuase well, if i tell him not to do something, he is very good about it. i feel like the biting is a result of physical pain (not a lot mind you, but enough) so i dont want to make him an EVIL, ANGRY cat that so many of us have encountered.

hehe..

who knew M4H had a soft spot for cats... 😛

Mine teethed for about 3 weeks, and then she was fine... we still wrassle, though her being point at 5 ends means she wins most times... (less I'm wearing my chainmaille..😀)

Sounds like everything will be fine then... between age and neutering some point down the line, most of those problems will be taken care of, hopefully.

Not far off actually. If you grab him by the scruff of the neck and growl at him a little he'll calm down. Just make sure you pet him once he settles, so he doesn't think you hate him.

Toy mice are a good idea, just make sure they've got something solid in them somewhere. Stuffed toys are also good, particularly beanie-baby style toys, not necessarily to help him teethe(sp?) but to distract him from chewing on you.

Don't be afraid to bop the kitten on the head if he starts chewing on you as you sleep.
