I have a 1.5 year old Burmese male cat and a 9 month old Burmese male kitten. They were the best of buds as of Sunday. I took the little one to the vet on Monday morning, had him neutered and front declawed, and picked him up today. The older cat now acts like he has never seen the little one before and is basically hostile. What gives? And yes, I checked to make sure they gave the right kitten back... 🙂

Give it a couple days. If the older one doesn't come around, wait until the kitten is completely healed up and give them both a bath, one after the other.

cats operate by smell, the little guy smells like a stranger now.

get a can of tuna, drain the juice into a bowl, dip your hands into the bowl of juice, rub your hands all over the older cat, repeat the process with the younger cat,you might need to do this several times but soon they'll be sniffing each other and soon they'll be grooming each otherand friends again🙂

or just foreign in general.

I would play with them together and do alot of petting between them to mix all the scents up.

They don't really like tuna, so I a drained a can of chicken (watered it down a bit) and did it. I now have 2 cats that smell like chicken and had a good meal to boot... The older one stopped his bitchin', and is now really, really curious about the little one... :cookie:

lol as to the cause, a lot of the pheromones that felines operate off of come from that area. I'm no animal expert, but I wouldn't be surprised if the neutering cut off some of said pheromone.

Yeah, I've had the same thing happen with my cats when one's gone to a trip to the visit for more than half an hour. Good to know the food smell thing worked, though I'd have been concerned that in the morning, one of them would be happy and full, and the other one, well, would be a pile of fur and bones 😉

Heh. This is from January.

As of today, the older one, "The Weasel", is still spooked by the younger one, "The Gopher". But they are crashed out on my bed, and mysteriously, neither smell like chicken today... 😛
