In one of the world’s longest detours, technology sales guru Roy Taylor will be reunited with some of his oldest friends when he takes over the worldwide channel sales role for AMD in 2013.

KitGuru adds some historical context and ponders what John Byrne’s decision to bring Roy inside AMD will mean for the chip specialist.

I hear he was the man behind TWIMTBP.

I like the players AMD has been bringing into the company. If they manage to survive these next few years, we are going to see the proverbial phoenix rises from the ashes.

Kit-Guru makes a good point: "Send the best troops into the field without proper equipment and supplies, and their skills won’t matter."

AMD Unsure About Transition Timeframe to 20nm Node

"A recent roadmap shows that the company plans to rely on 28nm fabrication process even in late 2014, when it launches its next-generation high-performance FX-series processors for desktops and new Opteron products for servers. As it appears, AMD wants to extend lifetime of nodes to ensure maximum availability and lowest cost."

If AMD shifts to only 2 different nodes for their products for ambidextrous strategy for integrating GPUs and CPUs together more easily, could this mean HD9000 series in 2014 will still be using 28nm as will AMD's CPUs? If NV transitions to 20nm with Maxwell and AMD is still stuck on 28nm for their GPU--> APU integration strategy to work with 28nm CPUs in 2014, then even the best salesmen won't save such a move.

Also, AMD cited lack of financial resources to push GPU design wins for customers in the notebook space. If they don't spend any $ on getting channel/OEM wins in 2013, NV will continue to gain market share at their reluctance to invest into custom designs.

Fair points RS, but consider that GlobalFoundries has been a complete disaster for AMD. Either AMD builds their own Fab (not going to happen) or they are at the mercy of TSMC, which means a complex design like an APU won't be doable right away on any new TSMC process. Consider the issues Nvidia and AMD have been faced with ongoing with TSMC for just GPU's.
