Kitchen renovation finally complete! Actual before/after photos are about halfway down. I stopped posting progress pictures after Week 9 when work grinded to a halt. Anyway, a full 3.5 months to complete from Day 1 to signing the final check. We are glad it's done and love our new kitchen!

My wife and I just started a kitchen renovation last week. Considering we started researching contractors, materials, etc last August, it felt like an eternity before it actually started. We've lived in the house since May '13, and considered the kitchen renovation a 5-10 year kind of reno on our overall roadmap, but figured it would actually be best now with just 1 kiddo running around (15 months) and probably less likely to get into real trouble vs having to manage 2 during the process.
Anyway, this will be a pretty extensive reno - tearing down existing kitchen to the studs, running engineered beams in for load bearing walls to open up the space. Raising the kitchen ceiling up a foot, tearing out some other faux beams to have a seamless ceiling height (single height ceiling of 10' kitchen, breakfast nook, family area, otherwise 12' in foyer, other living area, dining room) Putting in a massive 13' island, re-running plumbing/electrical to said island, all new appliances, continuing out wood throughout the kitchen. She being an interior designer, well, just meant the cash register kept ringing with every new idea that popped up
Anyway, this thread is meant more just to share status, as we're super excited now a week into it, but knowing some headaches or unexpected items will pop-up along the way.
Week 1: http://1drv.ms/1olXVPk
- Removal of all existing appliances, cabinets, tearing out all sheetrock on walls down to the studs. Tile was jack hammered up from the foundation. Decent start to the project over 2 days.
Week 2: http://1drv.ms/1POOGy3
- Removal of a really, really, really shitty PLASTIC window in our master bathroom. Yes, plastic. It was a total POS and let in so much of the elements during the summer/winter that it made the bathroom unbearable. Got plywood up and a roof on, as well as a covering while window is being made.
- In the main gameroom and kitchen - removal of all walls down to the studs. Raised up the kitchen ceiling from 9ft to 10ft. Also moved 2 beams up from the 9ft to the 10ft mark in the gameroom and framed in the section leading to the backyard to make it one smooth 10ft ceiling. Double 2x12 LVL beams installed along with support posts that completely open up the space to the gameroom.
Week 3: in progress this week - framing completed yesterday along with running new air intake vents. Inspector come view framing work. Plumber to come in and jackhammer up the foundation - need to run a drain line to the island for kitchen sink + water line. Also route gas to new stove location. Electrical also to be run underneath while foundation is jackhammered up.
