Kit for converting internal cd-rw drive into external cd-rw drive?

Hello, my sister just bought a new Dell Dimension L computer and surprisingly it has no external bays to put in an additional cd-rw drive we took off from her old pc. It only has one, and it is being taken by the dvd drive that comes with the computer. A while back I remember seeing some sort of kit to convert an internal cd-rw drive to an external drive. It came with the case and cables for the connection. Does someone know where I could find one of these or what they are called (if they have a name 😉)? Btw, the drive is an HP 9100 series drive, internal of course. Thank you in advance.

thanks, that is what i was looking for i think 🙂. Will keep looking now for any others. Thanks a bunch 🙂

If you installed a SCSI controller in her computer and bought an external SCSI CD writer, then she would be able to burn CDs. Occasionally I've seen kits to make IDE devices external, but I don't think the IDE spec was designed for external devices. Hence, I don't have much confidence that these kits would work well.

That's exactly how HP and others make external drives. It seems to work OK for them.....

Ever take apart an external CD drive? It's an IDE drive in a box with a power supply and an interface converter board. Just like the kits you can buy.
