Kissing strangers on the cheek as a greeting?

I was taught to do this with family members, but I thought it was a cultural thing (we're not from the US). I never saw anyone outside my family do it. Until now that is. I'm 26, and when I go out to parties and bars, girls whom I've just met that night will kiss me on the cheek as a goodbye greeting. Sometimes it's both cheeks, sometimes just one. Is this just something people pick up as they get older?

That's how it is in this country - girls always hug or kiss me as a greeting, and guys it's a handshake unless they're like my best friend.

Common in Quebec (French).

I went to school in Montreal and everyone does this there. However, it's only for guy-girl or girl-girl greetings. NOT for guy-guy greetings. :p

girls kiss me on the cheek when they greet. well, not kiss on the cheek, more like 'touch cheeks and make the kiss noise', and guys get the handshake, unless its a really close guy friend, then a half hug/handshake is ok
