Kirby's are some of the best vacs around, seriously. My buddy used to sell them and got one for himself, I borrow it to clean my couches and stuff, it gets really deep down crap out that others don't, and it beats renting a shampoo cleaner or something.

Since they cost them nothing, you can bargain a lot on them.

I'd be like, "Can it suck up a brick? Well why not, the blender on TV can do it!" And then just stare at them blankly.

Kirby's may be alright in their cleaning ability, but the prices actually sucks. You can get a vacuum of the same ability for 1/2 of a kirby.

I have a Kirby. Paid $600 about 7 years ago. Still going strong, but it's very heavy. I think I'm going to pick up a Dyson Animal tomorrow at Linen's N Things. I have a 25% Friends and Family coupon that has not limits (other than giftcards). No store coupons exlude Dyson's. So, I'm going to get a $459 vacuum for $344 + tax. :D

BTW, you might be able to pick up a good used one on ebay.

They left one with my wife years ago for her to try it out.
She signed a contract with them when they left. They never came back to pick it up, so the wife called 10 or 12 times, receiving various excuses over three or four months.
Some guy showed up at the door about a year later asking for the sweeper.
My wife told him to read his contract, it belongs to her.
Their lawyer even wrote a threatening letter to which she responded, "See you in court".
That was about 8 years ago and we still have the sweeper.
We have since bought another one. They're awesome.

my ex-hubby had one.. paid like 800GBP for it in 1985!!! WAY too expensive for a vacuum. But i fear that if someone knocked on my door, i would feel bad about them doing a demonstration and not buying... then the b/f would not understand why i paid $1,500. on a vacuum when we already have two.

:(

The Dyson really sucks things up too. Unfortunately the hose option sucks in my opinion which makes getting along baseboards and vacuuming furniture a pain. I'll keep using my Dyson for the carpets, but I just bought an Electrolux off ebay for the rest of the cleaning.

My family has had one since before I was born and it still works so it must be decent.

Good vacuums to be sure, but worth the price? If one has a lot of allergies or something, maybe. Another similar priced vacuum I've seen(former GF had one) used Water and was also very good, I don't recall the name of that one though. I'd checkout Consumer Reports or something similar. Watched some show recently and they said the Kirby was the best of what they tested, but there was 1 vacuum(don't recall brand, Hoover or Bissel I think) that cost $400(something) that cleaned just about as good and won for Price/Performance reasons.

Is it shaped like the video game character or something?

Hah! Who came first?

Who needs a vacuum anyhow =/

I don't care for a vacuum designed to suck debris straight through the impeller (I prefer a by-pass system), but if you like that, why not a Royal instead of Kirby. I'd certainly like to know WTF the difference is!
