I'm looking to build an i3-530 and need some ram (2x2GB). Has anyone used this ram? How far will these modules overclock at the standard settings at CL9 and 1.5v?

The factory spec's are CL9 (9-9-9-24), 1.5v, at 1333.

I haven't used that particular module, but I use Kingston ValueRAM in builds that don't call for OEM-supplied memory, and the performance is satisfactory. However, I haven't tried overclocking it, and considering that Kingston is not aiming this memory at enthusiasts, I doubt it would do particularly well.

I'm not looking at any serious overclocking of the ram, but I would like a little headroom in case I do a little overclocking. If the ram gets to ~ 1500Mhz (CL9, 1.5v) then I'd probably be fine with it.

I managed to Google an answer, so I'll post it for anyone else that may be interested.

overclockers …

Even cheap 1333 mem will do 1500-1600MHz easily. On my i7920 pc I have cheap kingston 1333 9-9-9 mem and it runs at 1550 8-8-8 at stock volts np.

At those speeds the Kingston valueram DDR3 1333 will be fine for my limited overclocking. I guess these days the process technology has improved so much from a couple of years ago, such that even inexpensive DDR3 ram can run well past its rating of 1333.

You can always use a lower RAM multiplier/divider when OCing your CPU, so high end/overclockable RAM is not needed.

Example: 200 BCLK x 22 CPU multi = 4.4 GHz

If using the 6x RAM divider, that'd be a mere DDR3-1200 speed...

Yes, thanks n7. I just got through reading a couple of articles on memory speed versus performance. It's amazing how little memory speed affects application perfromance on DDR3 from 1067 - 1600Mhz. I was just concerned that the ram would have at least some headroom over 1333 … being "ValueRam." …lol.

BTW … I live in Edmonton Alberta too!. Should probably update my sig, but I haven' t been active on the forums for a few years. But I'm building a new rig, so got interested in hardware again.

:)
