It's all up to you. It's my opinion that that memory is just fine for most of us. If you are going to do nothing but sit at your computer and run SANDRA benchmarks non-stop and then compare against everyone else, you may lose. If you are going to sit there and actually use the computer for something practical, then it will work for you perfectly.

You say you bought it off the shelf. I wonder if you bought the Kingston desktop memory at Best Buy that gets you a $25 MIR. Bought some of that a week ago, myself. Paying a net of about $65 for 512 megs of dual channel memory makes me feel a heck of a lot better than I felt when I bought 3 x 128 megs of Kingmax PC-150 back in the day for Lord knows how much.

I have had really good luck with kingston value ram. If you plan on oc you may want to pick up some OCZ 3700, if not you should be happy with your purchase.

Kingston ValueRAM is fine. Since you're running at stock speeds, you won't need the faster PC3500+ rated RAM. Timings don't do much for real world performance. If you bought twice the price RAM, you wouldn't feel the difference at stock speeds at all. The problem with ValueRAM is that they use so many different chips. But all Kingston ValueRAM comes with a lifetime warranty and Kingston is a good brand, so no big deal.

wow! that's a great deal for that ram! i bought my 512 megs of valueram for $85! but yeah on the topic, valueram is good ram. i'm happy with it. i'm running my ram at 2.5-3-3-6. it's fine for gaming but yeah if you benchmark a lot you'll get better scores with high end ram instead. real world performance it works just fine.

I just bought that same $65 512Mb ValueRam (256x2) and it works perfectly.
I run it @ 200 3-3-3-7 and it is rock stable.

I run my PC3200 ValueRAM at 200MHz 2.5-3-2-11 stable in dual channel. Different chips on each stick though.

Why does the Anandtech Weekly Buyer's Guide advise you to buy Mushkin pc3500 or OCZ 3700 for a High End System then? Is that assuming you "will" overclock I guess? Let us assume you had a p4 3.2C that wasn't overclocked... will there be no performance gain in games like Quake 3 etc. if you had the Mushkin/OC over the kingston valueram?

i like the fact that you can find their value ram in almost any computer store these days

basically becoming the mainstream standard in some store chains

There will be a performance gain, but that gain is very very minimal. Not worth the money in my opinion.
