Some people like the thrill of the chase. 5% price difference between this & new - what's your time worth? memtest86.

How can they refurbish ram? What can go wrong that doesn't ruin the whole thing??

Refurb=someone bought it, tried to overclock it (or some other reason), couldn't, returned it, kingston tested it, no problem, cleaned it up a bit, instead of throwing it away because it's no longer new, sell for 5% less.

yes.

sometimes some ram doesn't play nice with some setups = RMA, but maybe not because the ram is bad.
OR
maybe somebody is picky, runs memtest overnight at rated specs and pulls up 2 errors near the end = RMA.

In either case, this is the ram you are getting... do ya feel lucky?

NO, refurb products are not necessarily tested by manufacturer OR Newegg. The last refurb modules I received were defective, wouldn't even run quite UNDERclocked, had nothing to do with overclocking margins... YMMV

YEP - NewEgg uses their customers to test their RMA parts.
Usually they are NOT REFURBED OR TESTED!!!

Just a word of warning on Newegg refurbs. I bought this very stick a short while back thinking I would save a few bucks. My older games like BF1942, OFP, etc. played fine but newer games like Far Cry and Doom 3 would cause problems. Far Cry would spontaneously reboot the machine and Doom 3 would just drop to the desktop.

Bottom line - the RAM was bad. Memtest found a bunch of errors and with the same, brand new stick of ram, all was well.

I learned my lesson on this one. Plus they now charge a 15% restocking fee!

"15% restocking fee" is for new items? It only cost me return shipping.

IF your returning for any other reason than the product is not working i think they charge the fee...this sucked for our company cause stupid dood ordered a part we didnt need that cost $1000...this a $150 restockin fee....but it showed up on RMA list on newegg a couple weeks later ;)
