Yep, you'll have to register with Origin, it's not worth the trouble. I had problems getting the game to launch from Origin after buying on Impulse, and it was a nightmare. Better off waiting for the steam version to go on sale, that does not require Origin.

38 studios self published it on Steam. They're no more - no sale possible (look at Sacred 2 for example).

Game was 50% off on Origin, bought it and the DLC. It's very fun, quests are generic but the world feels fine and the combat is fun too.

Someone owns the rights (big huge games?), so you'd think they could put it on sale on Steam... it's on sale on Gamestop, so... but it's $59.99 on Steam currently.

The best thing I can say about this game is -

There are a lot of different ways to spend $60. This is one of them.

EA is the publisher in a lot of places (for GameStop too) - they get to decide there. It's the publisher who decides that (so for example on Origin it can also have a sale - EA again). But on Steam 38 studio was the publisher (and the developer - like Alan Wake). Since they closed doors, they can't decide.

So by that logic, who does the money go to (besides Valve)? No one? Is the money not going back to the creators whatsoever? Is it technically abandonware since the developer/publisher no longer exists? Why even purchase the game at all? Why not pirate it instead?

Not saying I'll torrent the game, but I'm just wondering how Steam can sell an orphaned game with no existing publisher or developer attached to it.

I believe the state of Rhode Island owns the IP now.

Yep. That's the case.

As for selling the game - depends how the deal with Steam was done. Perhaps they have a limited number of game keys and once those are over, the game will be deactivated from purchase? Saw one like that already. Money goes to an account of state of Rhode Island most likely - or to the account of 38 studios which was seized by the state?

One reason not to pirate it is that the ownership of the game has value to that owner - and the State of Rhode Island made a big investment, so you're stealing from the people of Rhode Island if the game is not bought. You're getting something of value, people paid to create that product.

I view 'abandonware' as a product you can't buy, not one where the publisher is gone.

Thanks, I understand now. I forgot that Rhode Island made a $75 million loan to 38 Studios, who in turn couldn't pay it back. It makes sense that the property was acquired by the state.

Ya, I understand taking a look at the situation and asking what's right, but in this case don't see justification for not paying for it where it goes to the studio's creditors.
