My main complaint about that movie was there was no sufficient backstory for his character at the beginning of the movie...he just was good with a sword for some reason.

No complaints about his backstory from me, as his motivations made sense. However, even in the DC they don't explain how Balian became so adept in battle aside from the implied gaining of experience over time.

So they still don't explain how after killing a priest and taking a single sword lesson regarding a high guard, he can whoop up on soldiers that presumably have been fighting once they were strong enough to lift a sword?

Nope. That is pretty much my biggest WTF in the entire movie too, but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

As some one else mentioned he was a blacksmith, which should lend some experience to swords and their handling...but lets face it, the movie played out with him as sort of a sword master...since he made short work of a large number of career soldiers and knights .
