Wife has been drooling lately over these two but is having a hard time deciding. Me too. She is leaning toward the Nook HD because of the external storage ability. She wants to be able download photos and transfer them to her pc using the mSD card in an adapter. However Im pretty sure its just as easy to plug either one in with their cables and transfer them. She doesnt care about the Kindle having a camera.

So I guess it comes down to specs, build quality and future proofness. Which would you recommend.

Nook HD because of the external storage and it can be easily rooted or made dual boot (so to speak) so you can have the Nook ecosystem and the full Google Play experience.

If it's just about transferring files, plugging in the USB cable or using a cloud service like Box or Dropbox would be much easier than using micro SD.

Unfortunately I see almost no reason to get a Nook HD, unless you are doing something where 32GB of storage isn't enough and you just HAVE to have micro SD.

The choices are really down to the Kindle Fire HD or the Nexus 7.

The Nexus 7 is easily the winner if you want a general purpose tablet. You have Google Play out of the box and it's huge app selection. It's stock Android and fast. You can install either Kindle or Nook apps on it for e-reading.

Kindle Fire HD would be a nice choice for someone that wants to pair the device up with Amazon Prime subscription for free ebooks, free streaming movies and TV shows from Amazon. It's not as fast, but has a better screen and speakers, so makes for a better video watching experience.

I'm an Amazon Prime member & I'm quite pleased with the Kindle fire HD, the screen is terrific & the sound quality is astonishing.

I went from a Kindle fire to a nexus 7. I I didn't think I was missing much because I rooted my fire and had a different launcher. Boy was I wrong, the stock Android experience on the nexus 7 is head and shoulders above the Kindle fire.

I was exactly on the same boat. Really liked my Kindle Fire on ICS, but I didn't know what I was missing until I got my Nexus 7.

I'm still in awe of how good the Nook HD screen is. I've had to hold off getting one (or the 7" version) because I think the Nexus will serve me better, but every time I handle a Nook HD I want one... bad

The community thus far is small, yes. But there IS still a community in bringing full android to the Nook HD and they've succeeded in booting it from the SD card. Between a Kindle and Nook and I would definitely go Nook, but the question gets a little grey when you add the Nexus 7 in the mix.

Been fairly happy with my 8.9 fire HD. I installed Adw launcher and put a few other unauthorized apps on like chrome which have made a huge lmprovement. HDMI out is fun for Netflix. Bigger screen is what made me go with the kindle.

If she wants to use Android Apps, other than reading/music/photos, get the Amazon tablet.
The nook app store is awfully empty, very empty.

If you buy an app in the regular Android store, and you want it on either the Nook or Amazon tablet, you will have to buy it again as they both have their own stores.

To get google play you have to root your kindle. You can however download and install unauthorized apps. I'm using tapatalk right now on my fire hd.

That's why I seriously prefer Nook, because the rooting is so much easier. But for these two specific devices (Kindle Fire HD vs Nook HD), I believe Nook Forum posted a detailed comparison a while back, but I can't seem to find the link to the exact thread.

I have the fire hd 8.9" If you have prime, its no contest. Get the fire. If not, its a little tougher.

If you are comfortable rooting etc, they both have play, the both have CM10.1 builds in the works, both can run other launchers right now. The main difference then is a camera and prime VS micro SD slot. The nook has a reputation for easier modding, but there is already a alternate boot loaded for the 8.9.

If you aren't a modder (or your wife might not want the rough edges) The comparison is a little less even. The kindle has an ecosystem leaps and bounds better than nook. That's both apps and video. The only positive I can give the nook without modding is if you really need more than 16gb local storage. Amazon charges way too much to go to 32gb and has no micro SD. Right now the 16gb versions are pretty much identical in pricing.

Pretty much is if you're a hacker and don't care about prime, go nook. Otherwise go fire.
