Kindle Failure?

I've had a horrible experience with the Kindle. I've owned 2 Kindle 3s and both of them have died. The first lasted 8 months and the second lasted 10 months! Amazon replaced the first, but refuses to replace the second!

Anyone else with similar experience? It seems quite common from what I've been reading.

Not really. I did have one problem which was when the K3 first came out, the original cases were shorting out some readers. They replaced that and the case and since then no issues.

Hmm. That sounds unfortunate. I have a Kindle 2 and Kindle 4, and my girlfriend has a Kindle 3, all of them are chugging away without issue....

Hmm... isn't there a one year warranty on them?

Pretty sure it's from purchase date of the original. They will replace it 1000 times in the year, but they don't extend it for every replacement.

If that's what he meant... not sure.

Hmm... that doesn't sound right. Otherwise it would be trivial to make some PoS that is pretty much guaranteed to fail in a year and get out of replacing it after the second failure.

Could probably get a replacement out of them if you let it be known that you'll be complaining about it to various organizations.

We are getting to the point where more and more consumer are having their final one die outside the 1st year. Amazon refuses to stand by their product!

Actually, this reminded me - are you using a non-lighted case for it? There was a known bug in the Kindle 3 that actually did fry my girlfriends' - Amazon replaced it and gave her a free lighted cover for the trouble.

Basically, inside of the Kindle 3 cover holder are electrical contacts. This is how the lighted case gets its power, through the prongs that holds it onto the Kindle. However, if it isn't a powered case, it would, over time, short out the Kindle. I was under the impression they fixed this issue, but maybe you had an older one that wasn't fixed? Given that this is a known defect in the product I would expect them to be better about replacing it...

Yea, but this is the way pretty much all manufacturer warranties work. Even the 3 month ones on some products.

I think I may very well have one of the cases described. What did it do to your girlfriends? My screen has all kinds of crazy lines on it.

That sounds familiar, but honestly, I don't remember exactly. This was about a year and a half ago, hence it took a little while to even remember that it happened :)

After a few days of pestering Amazon, they finally stepped up. I had to purchase a new one, but I was able to get a new K4 and free case for a total of $50.
