I took a temp to perm position not really expecting it to tern into much and just act as a filler while I found something better. well I didn't find anything and ended up really liking the company. when I was hired in I was hired to assist someone else, they ended up quiting and I took over there responsibilities in addition to what I was already doing (this was a week into it) and after a few days getting used to the work load I"ve been told I'm the best person they have had in that position in a while and all my immediate supervisors love me it seems (I've never been in this spot where i have basically everyone telling me I'm doing a great job).

Here comes the cavet I want to go perm since I really am enjoying the company. It isn't in my field but I enjoy the work and its challenging. so a month ago I aproached the hiring manager about it and he said he would look into it, said something about a buy out on my temp contract or whatever (I guess that makes sence but this is my first temp job) basically I keep getting the run around from the hiring manager on whats going to happen.

I over heard a conversation about me by one of my immediate bosses and the VP sounded to me the VP wanted to hire in someone else to replace me because he didn't want to pay the buyout and my boss was arguing just to hire me because he didn't want to have to train someone else and not have the work done right, I only heard my bosses side of the conversation so don't know what it was resolved at. I really think if I told them to hire me or i'll quit they'll hire me then because frankly they are fucked without me right now. I go to lunch for 30min and come back to a mess to sort out I can't imagin them making it thru a day without me there. but then they could call my bluff and i'm screwed.

anyone have any experience in this type of situation? is there anything I can do with my temp firm to help me get hired in, any angles of leverage I might be able to use. I think I've about leveraged internal networking all I can, the VP joked the other day about I must be paying people to talk me up (had no idea they were). but sounds like the guy is a cheap ass. this is kinda new territory because frankly i'm useually the just does enough to get by type of guy.

yes I know this is a rambling mess.

Temp agency won't help you - you're how they make money. I think you've done enough networking, just see how it goes. You probably won't get the job but hey you never know.

How much longer do you have to stay a temp before the contract is up? My last company was something like 1000 hours. The company i was working for had an opening and bought out my temp contract to keep me there and into that opening.

If you gotta stay a temp for a couple more months, do it...but if they won't ever hire you because your contract doesn't have an end date, find another job and quit. If they want you bad enough, they'll buy out the contract.

yeah I don't beleve there is an end to the contract, guess i'll just start job hunting again so I can have an option and possibly use it as leverage. I really hate the michigan job market so damn hard to find a job at a good company, and when you do the people doing the hiring know how hard it is and really don't care if you leave or not.

everyone is replaceable to a VP, he is only looking at the $$$ , not the impact

don't get too aggressive, give your boss time to fight for you

Delivering an ultimatum is not a good idea. Whenever an employee has done that to me, I usually will appease them in the short term, while I plan my strategy to replace them. You are far better off working with your boss to come up with a strategy to alleviate your VP's concern about the money. I don't know what the buyout amount is, but perhaps you could agree to work an extra hour a day for a couple of months to make up for the extra cost to the company for the buyout.

The only time I ever worked a temp to perm it was expected that if I liked the company and the company liked me that at the end of the temp period I would get an offer from the company for a permanent position otherwise temp to perm makes no sense. It may be that you just have to wait out whatever the temp period was supposed to be so that you can go permanent. In my case I know the contracting company ended up with a finders fee once I did move to a permanent position with the company I was doing the work for.

If they are that concerned about the buyout, just tell them your willing to wait until your contract is up, and then you can go perm without the buyout expense.
