kind of neat the way i setup "My documents" folder on my network HTPC/DESKTOP/SERVER

just an idea for pretty slick way to set things up if you like your data centralized...


i created a folder on my fileserver, and then pointed "my documents" path on both my workstation and my HTPC, made things really streamlined...i course gave the HTPC read only permissions to the folder so no accidental deletes...

another cool thing is i installed a bittorent client on the HTPC as well and pointed it to the Mydocs/my videos built in windows video folder which media center edition uses by default.. my workstation also uses this folder to dump it's bittorent downloads.... i thought i was pretty slick anyway....

Not sure how that's "slick", especially when you have read only permissions only.

I would have gone with an automatic incremental backup/ plus cross drive comparison to ensure both sides have the most recent copy of any files/folders, and they will also be backed up a 3rd time in case of accidental deletes using the incremental backup (to save space and maintain a history of changes as well as reduce the impact of accidental deletes etc).

that would be cool, but i dont keep any media at all on my HTPC whatsoever...it's just an OS, players+codecs.. component out and digital coax out to a receiver...

all my media is stored on a dedicated fileserver in another room...and in said server there a raid:1 array so, the data is backed up

We have it that way at work, it's great until the file server goes down and everybody calls because their desktop is gone. But yeah with proper redundancy in place I think this is a great way, and it does beat roaming profiles, which are very flaky and crap out all the time.

I should do this at home too. My stuff is still localized, and backing up a windows machine from linux can be a pita. It would simplify my backup routine if I kept all my stuff on my server.
