Good, too bad that country has been brainwash. It's not the next generation that will change anything its the next leader.

You have to see vice.com's tours inside north Korea and the north Korean labor camps!

Good riddance, may he rot in hell. We can all only hope for the sake of the people of North Korea that his son is different and willing to move the country in the right direction. Even if he is, it's entirely uncertain that he has the power to do it -- there might be a group of military generals in control at this point.

Good riddance to a mad man, unfortunately his son is probably every bit as much one and may have been calling the shots since Il's stroke.

He was an evil despot and I hope he rots in hell.

That said, I always find transition in situations like this kind of scary. NK is an incredibly benighted, ignorant country thanks to his hammerlock control, and I fear he might be succeeded by someone even worse.

Wikipedia: "Some analysts believe that upon Kim Jong-il's death, Jong-un's uncle Chang Sung-taek will act as regent, as Jong-un is presently too inexperienced to immediately lead the country. After his fathers death on December 18, 2011, Homefront is going to happen, as it was prophesied.[50]"

They built such a cult of personality around him and there is so little hard information publicly available about the inner political workings of NK that it's really hard to say what will happen.

The Chinese must be happy to see that the nuclear tipped splinter they helped jab in the eye of our Uncle Sam is still stuck in there good and deep. The balance of power in the far east is maintained (in the eyes of the Chinese) and all's well.

I guess for them, it's good to have a crazy second cousin playing around with nukes next door.

Him being evil doesn't change the fact that his people love him and he did many great things for his country.

Great means large, you know. Despite his small stature, he did have a disproportionately large effect on the world.

Then again, I don't see why "greatness" should affect opinions of his death.

why did the Asian stock market take such a beating over this news?
I understand that there is more political instability since we don't know much about the successor but this is good news that Kim Jong Il is dead. With the already bear sentiment in the market that has been going on for a while, people are saying this is negative news which I don't agree with. I would have expected to see the major Asian indexes to rise.

His country is one of the very few on Earth where people regularly starve to death; its people are on their way to becoming a distinct subspecies like the pigmy. Its people have absolutely none of the human rights enjoyed by most of the globe; even the staunchest Islamic theocracy treats its dissenters better and its adherents incredibly better. He and his father before him took a backwards nation and turned it into a highly- if not well-armed hell on Earth, and to the extent that his people love him, it is solely because with his widespread secret police and informant network, it's a requirement to keep on breathing. Kim Jong Il is a personification of benign evil and I sincerely hope and expect he is warm and toasty in Satan's embrace as we speak.

Here's hoping that his son will choose his people over personal aggrandizement. And Homefront will never happen; if Korea unified under North Korean leadership there would simply be more people starving.
