Killzone 3 beta only for select PS Plus subscribers

You knew it was coming. Now to see the fallout.

Sony has announced that Killzone 3 will be getting a limited multiplayer public beta on October 25 for the PS3. How limited? To get in you first have to subscribe to Playstation Plus. The beta will give participants the chance to check out some of the new multiplayer modes like the new Operations game type, the party system, the jet pack and the mechs (aka exoskeleton vehicles).

To get in beta hopefuls will need to go through the following steps:

  1. Subscribe to Playstation Plus if you haven't already subscribed.
  2. Download an exclusive Killzone 3 XMB theme that will pop up on the Playstation Store on October 19. The first 10,000 downloaders (5,000 for North America, 5,000 for Europe) will be given access to the beta.
  3. Wait for an email on October 25 that will include the code to download the beta.

I'd love to be a part of this if I can remember to look for the theme. I wonder how fast 5,000 PSN+ subscribers will get to it.

Wonder how this will play out. I'd doubt I'll ever jump through hoops like that for beta access, but apparently Sony thinks enough people will. They're probably right. Is the Killzone theme free?
Doesn't bother me, I haven't played the previous Killzone games anyway.

"Free" but only available to PSN+ members.

Not that bad then. I still wouldn't sign up for + just to get beta access. Although, you could probably sell the code after the fact and recoup some of the cost. How much do + subscriptions go for anyways?

It's similar to Xbox Live Gold - $50 for a year.

Not similar to live in a few weeks, live is going up to like 80-100 in a month.

Source? I know in November it's going up to $60 but haven't heard anything beyond that. Plus, no one pays msrp for live subscriptions, sales occur often enough and many times you could get it for $30/year, though that will be rarer now.

The PS3 Plus FAQ says that the beta offers will be limited and not open to all members. What's the surprise again?

At least the service isn't forcing users to buy it for simple peer-to-peer online play in all games with internet features.

Uh yeah...no. It's going up only $10. Not $30 to $50.

They will offer a "Family Pack" though for $100 which comes with 4 LIVE Gold accounts and enhanced parental controls and MS Point sharing.

What BS idiot? Look it up, live is going up to $10 a month x 12 months=$120. Of course if you buy the 12 month pack, etc, its like $100 for 12 months.
Wow, you need to check your facts. It will go up to $5 a month, making it a total of $60 a year. Good job fanboy!

He's technically right, but for the wrong reason. The MSRP for the 1 month gold subscription will go up to $10/month. I don't know why anyone would pay by the month when you can get a year's subscription for $60 (half price), and on sale for even less.

And I don't know where he's getting the $100 for 12 months. Missed that bit at first.

No he was wrong, and calling informed people idiots when he is in fact the idiot is kinda funny.

He's not wrong, technically. If you pay monthly it will be $10/month. But obviously the annual price is cheaper(est).

Most people with any sense don't do that but sadly there are people who pay monthly.

LOL, PS+ is the same way, so technically he's a troll :awe:

PS+ is $18 for 3 months, or $50 a year.

$50 for 15 months of PS+ right now, and if you choose not to get it then all of your online capable games aren't heavily neutered like with Live. There's a huge difference between the two services in how you are basically forced to get it or not.

Unless you want the Killzone 3 beta, which is what this thread is about.

PS+ is also not needed unless you want a $3 discount on Cuboid... you can make this argument for any of the discounts, freebies and features.

The bottom line is you aren't seriously comparing being forced to pay in order play any 360 game online to early PS+ beta access to one game that will likely open up to all sometime before launch? Tell me you aren't making that feeble arguement.
