Killzone 2 - very disappointing

So I bought it seeing it get pretty good reviews on various gaming sites. Right off the bat the game turned out to be pretty disappointing. Basically it strikes me as a Gears of War wannabe, yet it's lacking in all the places where GOW shines:

1) Original story line
2) Nice combat scenes
3) Nice variety of original, increasingly more difficult "bad guys"

To top it all off, the final scene (fight with Radick) is just plain repetitive and boring. For starters you have to fight off hordes (and I mean it) of exactly the same foes. No originality there, basically you're locked in a rectangular room and wave after wave of exactly the same bad guys come after you.

After you're finally done with them Radick himself appears. And his major move is basically teleporting behind your back and one-shotting you. Needless to say very frustrating - and not because it's difficult (GOW final boss was tough too), but because it's very one dimensional.

Two thumbs down from me.

I'll take it you haven't played the online multiplayer yet, then. Now, MP starts off slow, but you unlock things as you advance. I personally love the MP portion of the game. It is, by far, the best part of the game. The SP campaign is, well, weak. I believe this is the general opinion of the game. VERY good MP, mediocre SP.

Yes, the final battle is fucking annoying. This spawned my hatred for the incompetent Rico.

As far as the story goes, it seems like the developers couldn't decide if they wanted Sev to be a silent protagonist (a la Gordon Freeman) or a fully fleshed-out character that you just happen to control. So we ended up with an awkward mix of both.

And Gears is terribly generic. I love the clichéd characters and the cut scenes are done well, but it's nothing unique. Besides, it's all about popping heads with the sniper rifle and chainsawing enemies into a bloody mess. The story is mostly irrelevant.

I sucked too much at MP to really get into it. Once I finally had a good match, I got...nothing. Returned it to Gamefly after a couple weeks. I also couldn't get into the SP at all - I think I did 3 missions before getting tired of it.

Yeah, it was definitely money not well spent for me as I don't do much MP on my PS3. I thought SP was okay, but I was one of those people who did not like the controls at all. That made it hard to like any part of the game.

Is this regarding the button configuration or the issue of aiming/looking around (delayed, weighted, etc.)? If it's the latter, that has been fixed in patches for a long while now.

Still, without MP, the game is just a pretty face with not a whole lot else to offer.

I wouldn't quite say that, because even without MP, I find the game enjoyable. Maybe because I knew exactly what I was going into with the game, because I enjoyed Killzone 1. It set up the stage for a great story, and they had some great plot moments in K2. The big thing was the entire presentation, the mix of the story with that incredible graphics/animations, it just felt like you were right in the mix. The developer has certain weaknesses, making the story and characters standout being something they haven't done well, so hopefully they'll improve for K3.

LOL, that made my day. Argo gets the award for comedy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed GoW and I've had hours of fun in both SP and MP, but it's generic.

I would only play it now because my friends want me to play with them, but other than that I haven't touched GoW in a few months (same with KZ2). And quite honestly, I'm bored of FPS right now, that goes for COD too! I might just play MP in MGS4 to mix it up a little!

KZ2 isn't for everyone, and I'm not here to try to change your mind. Return it or trade it back in. I personally had lots of fun with the game. One of the few games I don't regret buying at launch.

Seriously, if GoW is everything you said it was, then I have a whole stack of grammy award winning Vin Diesel movies to sell you that I know you'll love. Guaranteed!

The lack of local coop made me cancel my preorder and 100% pass on the game.
