About a year and a half ago I asked the same question and got the correct answer here. It involved changing a number in the string from 5 to 0 (I believe). Well last week I re-formated and reloaded this computer and of course I have the same problem again, but I have forgot where to find this string so I can change the number back to 0. Can someone please give me the path to find this modem string info?.Or if you know of any utilities etc that can do the same
Thanks

M is what you're looking for.

Open a connection to your modem's com port (with hyperterminal or similar)
ATM0 - sets volume to 0
AT&W - writes to NVRAM.

Then you should be right until you reset factory defaults or change it somewhere/somehow.

On my USR 56k modem all you have to do is... Under the "Modems" control panel, click on your modem, then "properties", next click on the "connection" tab, then advanced. Under the "Extra Settings" field add "M0".
