Two robotics experts, Prof Ronald Arkin and Prof Noel Sharkey, will debate the efficacy and necessity of killer robots.
The meeting will be held during the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).
A report on the discussion will be presented to the CCW meeting in November.
This will be the first time that the issue of killer robots, or lethal autonomous weapons systems, will be addressed within the CCW.

Hippie mindset incoming.. why do we need these things? Who are we killing with these?

The bad guys.
It's about killing the bad guys without the lives of the good guys being at risk.

Good and bad are decided based on whether you control the robots or not. If you control the robots you are the good guys.

It was obvious that the age of robots was coming. The 6th and 7 th generation fighter aircraft are going to be flown completely by robots which won't have the weakness/limitations that the human bodies have. The robots will fight on our behalf. Just to make it clear this time that both the good and bad guys would have robots. The only thing that would change is the way we fight. In the future mere human beings cannot fight themselves against the robots even if they want to. Technological advancement is going to be the deciding factor. Also, we are soon going to see robots that would handle all our day to day house work. As, the military and defence innovations are adopted for good use as well.

Killer robots do not "debate" anything, OP. :colbert:

This "debate" will be a massacre.

At what point are our robots fighting the chinese and russian robots? I mean, if all it turns into is who can manufacture the most/best robots, seems kinda boring.

Fake war to go with fake capitalism and fake money. At this point, you might as well battle over a chess table.

You people laugh now, but you won't laugh when John Conner from Anandtech is the only thing standing between you and having your skull crushed by a T-800.

The US government already has skynet up and running (the joke's on us, it's actually the internet) while the NSA organizes the data into an easy to read database, so it makes sense they'd start building the hardware to go with it.

Oh, thank you ol' wise and great UN for spending millions of dollars on a "debate" that will mean squat at the end of the day. I'm glad you will feel warm and fuzzy inside after having this discussion.

The joke is on us. Those robots won't fight robots. They will be sent after humans. The "bad" guys will have to build robots to defend humans. It's a vicious cycle building bigger and bigger robots until finally the Transformers have taken over Earth, I mean Cybertron.
