Killed a CPU due to negligence, everything else should be OK right?

Never killed a CPU before so this is all new to me. I was working late at night & got careless, caught a stray wire between the core of an Athlon XP & the HS. No burn marks or anything fun like that but it hasn't posted since.

I'm assuming everything is still A-OK for this new Barton I have here to put in its place? Assuming I can keep the wire out of there...

overheated probably due to the wire. Should have no problems with the new core

R.I.P.

It was a POS Thorton core anyway. I killed it shortly after I discovered that, I think secretly I wanted it to die so I'd have an excuse to replace it.

The Barton is up & running great though.

No clue. There's no visible damage.

No crushed/chipped core, no burn marks.

The rest of your hardware should be fine.

And yeah, if the heatsink wasnt the touching the core in any area, you can bake it in under 5 seconds easy.

so if a CPU has no cooling at all it ll kill itself in under 5 seconds. can it really increase in temperature that fast?

5 secs is a little exaggerated. I can keep the HS off and put my finger on it to make sure it is working properly. I did it for 15seconds before i yanked the cord.

Now i wouldnt' recommend it because it isn't good, but 5 secs wont kill it.

This is false, 5 seconds is actually prudent, i personally killed a CPU in under 3.

If there is no thermal throttling (Pentium 4) it will die very very fast.

Maybe if you keep the computer in a freezer, it might survive more than 15 seconds without a heatsink. 🙂

Granted i was testing on a 35Watt mobile barton.

I never have, and a good thing too i guess 😉, tested with a Prescott.
