I have a Dell Optiplex model 760 which has a Seagate 80GB hard drive in it.

I am wanting to WIPE the drive, so I can installed Linux OS on it.

But when I attempt to boot to the Killdisk CD, I am getting an error code and the Killdisk program is not able to load and start.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be ? According to what I can see I am using the latest and greatest version of Killdisk, i.e. 4.1.

I can use boot & nuke to wipe the drive but that takes an inordinate amount of time !!!!

Thanks.

You can also try Seagate's bootable Seatools. Which I recommend. At least in that case you can do a quick SMART test and then a quick erase, if it still supports it.

Otherwise... if you can, I'd pull the drive out and plug it into a Windows machine. Then you can run 'diskpart', select the disk and do a 'clean.' This will clear the (I believe) 1MB beginning and end of the disk which is plenty to clean the boot sector and partition table, essentially giving you a blank enough slate.

If you ABSOLUTELY must do a full zero, then I'd still run Seatools for Windows or in diskpart, instead of 'clean' do 'clean all.' When using diskpart, DOUBLE CHECK that you chose the right disk, otherwise you will have a LONG weekend. :) Best of luck.
