I sw3ar, I'm going to kill the people who initially said "this is all legit, everyone will get their iPods, and everything will be fine." It's turned in to one giant pyramid scheme, and it's getting tiring.:|

My two friends sw3ar on their parents grave's it'lll work as well as free1pods.com says it will.

Maybe it's legit but it's still highway robbery in the way they do it.

D!E free1pods.

It's no different then any other referral type business. How is it highway robbery ? If anything, this one is one of the "best" offers out there.

They NEVER see any credit card information, allow you to use a generic spam email address, dont verify any name or numbers, and only require a mailing address to mail the products.

I dont doubt it will eventually collapse but didnt most of the great "hot deals sources" of 2000 ? 800.com still around ? ValueAmerica? Nope, but people sure got some great stuff out of it. If you don't want to try it fine, but don't knock it because you think it's something it's not.

There's no reason to bring it here though. I personally don't care about it in sigs, but apparently other people do. Worthless posts about it, especially from people that are _not_ part of the Anandtech community, piss me off to no end.

I agree, it's up to the owner to decide what content is suitable for their site. Im referring to the blatant bashers who are too lazy or ignorant to read up on something and find out that it is not what they think, but instead use their old (if's it too good to be true, it definitely is) logic.

The logic isn't flawed. Their complaints come from the fact you have to get people to sign up for something in order to get anything.

It's multilevel marketing, ie. a pyramid scam. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It only works because most of the moronic children who sign up can't get enough referrals. Money and things that cost it do not appear out of thin air.

If it's a pyramid scheme, how do you explain a few of those Fortune 500 companies participating in it? I'm sure they have a couple hundred lawyers in hand to tell them to not participate in pyramid schemes as they are illegal in the U.S.

Ok I'll elaborate; it's almost exactly the same as a pyramid scheme, it's just been switched up enough to remain legal (for now). It relies on ~10 people losing out for every one who makes out like a bandit, just like pyramid schemes. Where did you think they came from, the free iPod fairy?

I am doing it as I have nothing to lose, an IPOD to gain, and takes NO EFFORT

I got to use Ancestry.com for 2 weeks free (usually 100 year membership).... So I got to check out everything they had in their databases for free...

*You all need to have a bit more AT-HOT DEALS spirit* 🙂

But who exactly is "losing out"? Nobody. OK, so you get some people who can't get enough referrals to get their own free ipod, and all they "lost" was getting a free trial to AOL or whatnot. Doesn't seem like losing to me.

Either way, I'm taking part in it, but I'd NEVER spam a forum for it. Hell, I don't even put it in my sigs. I do, however, get the emails of people on my campus who ask about my ipod, and have people sign up like that. 4 down, 1 to go. My entire calculus class wants in on it, so we're organising it so the class first sees how many friends/family would do it for them, and whoever doesn't have enough referrals, the classmates who DO have enough sign up through them. Everyone wins (if they send them all out).
