Kill a watt says 590 watts at the wall. What is the minimum PS I can use, recommend

I have a computer that says 570-600 w at the wall according to kill a watt. Right now I have a brand new 1350w that is powering it but I'll be putting that in my new build. I have a 600w cooler master laying around, would that be enough or do I need something beefier. thx

list your components:
- case
- CPU
- graphics card(s)

Any special requirements, like a large number of SATA cables?

Older coolermaster case I had laying around

Intel dx975x mobo

Old Pentium D cpu, 4x 2gb ddr2 ram

Sata 2 intel ssd

One 120mm exhaust fan

2 x 7950 video cards running full load.

I'm guessing you use it to mine litecoins or some other scrypt-based coins? In that case you want a unit with a decent amount of wattage overhead to support running 100% GPU load 24/7. Your 600W Cooler Master isn't powerful enough in my opinion.

You also want a unit with very high efficiency, it will eventually pay itself back (assuming this is a long term project), though the exact amount you save per month or per year depends on how much your electricity costs.

What is the exact model of your current power supply? 600W at the wall can mean anything from 480W to 550W actual load depending on how efficient your current unit is.

Finally, where are you going to buy the new unit from?

Pentium D's run extremely hot. See if you can down clock / undervolt it, you might shave off 50-80 watts right there. That said, also see if you can undervolt the 7950's slightly, many people have luck @ 800Mhz at .95 ish volts on the vgpu.

Otherwise, invest in a higher watt / more efficient psu.

Shoot if your board supports it, I have an e2160 i'll send ya for 15$ shipped

I'm actually mining at the stock 850MHz @ 0.95V, but that's just to keep the noise down. As long as the power supply allows and noise isn't a concern, it's better to run higher clocks to keep hashrate up

RS-500-PCAR is a 500W unit. Maybe yours is the RS-600-PCAR? Though even that one doesn't have the necessary PCIe connectors for two 7950's. Either you're (a) using two molex to PCIe adapters and the unit is indeed the above, or (b) you actually have some unit with four PCIe connectors.

If (a) is correct, I'm extremely surprised the unit with at most 432W on the +12V hasn't died yet - yes you heard right, a 600W unit with 432W (two 216W rails) on the +12V; that makes it a 450W unit for continuous use, and I wouldn't even be sure of that because the OEM behind it is Seventeam D:.

How did you get to 432W? [paraphrasing, actual source removed by edit]
The link I posted shows the RS-600-PCAR has two +12V rails worth 18A each, 18A x 12V = 216W. So combined +12V load is 2 x 216W at most.

On the RS-500-PCAR, +12V is worth 360W. Are you actually running two 7950's off of this, or is that something you were considering to do? Because the power supply should be shutting off with that sort of load.

Reviews of both units over at hardwaresecrets show how crappy they really are:

The CM eXtreme series PSU's are junk. I have the 500w model and it's fine for low end builds, but I would never put a 24/7 load on it. Even the CM rep I spoke to over @ Johnny Guru's site said they were crap PSU's and they are about to be discontinued. I would use a Gold+ PSU @ 650-750w on that build. But's that's just me..

I can thank my buddy Teizo for informing me of this current Newegg deal -

Awesome price, for an awesome PSU.

no I'm running the video cards off of a 1350w but I'm going to use the enermax 1350w in my main rig and was going to use the 600w coolermaster for a small mining rig. Thx again for the informative replies.
