At what age did your kid need a laptop or desktop for school?
She has a tablet now but the charging port died. Looking at 2 in 1s, laptops and tablets.

the only time you need a laptop/desktop for school is typing a report or doing research (which really you should go to a library for).

My daughter had her own computer from age four. She just graduated high school, and she never really *needed* her own machine, but having a machine of some kind available became necessary when she started high school.

I second this. Libraries teach students how to do research. This can't be self taught no matter how computer savvy you are.
