Cy-Fair teens charged with arson in flag burnings
By S.K. BARDWELL
Copyright 2003 Houston ChronicleTwo Cy-Fair High School students are being charged with felony arson for burning flags at a northwest Harris County business in March and at Goodson Middle School Saturday night.
Randall Heinrichs, 17, of the 14500 block of Enchanted Valley in Cypress, was arrested Saturday. He is charged with felony arson and felony criminal mischief and has already been released after posting a total bail of $12,000.
Another suspect, not named because he is a juvenile, will be charged with the same crimes, officials said.
The two are charged with stealing, then burning a flag at Lumber Tag Specialties in the 13300 block of Skinner Road in March. The flag was that which draped the coffin of the owner's brother.
On Saturday, authorities said a flag was burned on the campus of Goodson Middle School on Huffmeister at Barker-Cypress Road. The damage caused by both fires in estimated at $1,500.
Investigators said they found several anti-American and racially motivated hate posters in Heinrichs' bedroom when he was arrested.

as they should be... i mean, i don't care if you burn your own flag, but it is, and should be, against the law to burn the property of others without their permission

They burned someone elses property. Screw them.

They burned a flag draping someone's coffin. that should be a death penalty offence.

The "big deal" in this case is that they set OTHER fires. I doubt they have a "clue" about protesting (or much of anything).

I've never heard of "felony criminal mischief" before.

Do a google search . . . Results 1 - 10 of about 1,080. Search took 0.13 seconds.

You have to hear of something before you can do a google search on it.

Evidently these guys are charged with both flag burnings.
How many US flags cost $750 each? (pretty BIG ones)

Two fires both for the purpose of burning US flags evidently caused $1500 damage to other nearby property.
They'd better hope for a liberal jury (in Texas!?! :Q )

ANd - YES - STEALING a flag to burn it is not covered by any "rights".

I am not denying that you may not have heard of it before. I just "suggested' that it is well-known and my google search not only confirmed it but could educate you if you care to be so educated. ;)

those aren't *other* fires at all, from what it says. it's probably like scorch marks on something *shrug*

anyways, i don't quite understand what you're trying to get at... all i said was that the charge seems correct.

Yes, google is my friend, despite the accusatory thread. But there aren't many threads we can't refer to google. Could this possibly be how people get 10k+ posts so fast?

Run into thread, skim, "here's what google has to say," and out. I guess that's off topic though. Which, on the other hand, is why I'm here.

Well maybe I need sleep. :p

:D

Actually, my choice of "other fires" was inappropriately inaccurate.

A better choice might have been "other things" were also burned. Evidently these boys were not acting "safetly" as the fire spread to casue $1,500 damage. So the charge is not "just for flag-burning" . . . it's basically theft and arson AND since they were probably not supposed to be on schoold grounds they get the miscellaneous charge: Criminal Mischief.

They got "the book" thrown at them. However, depending "who their daddy is" they will either "be made an example of" or "get off lightly".

;)

There's something really wrong with burning a flag draped over a coffin. :(
