Never understood Dream Theater. La'Brie can't pull off the vocals for the songs they sing/ is a mediocre singer.

Symphony X is far and large much much better than DT, and probably are the best Prog Metal band.

My favorite DT song (not a big fan of them) but I do like few songs.

That piano girl is missing all kinds of notes....and once guitars kick in it's really hard to hear anything else. Still a great effort though.

wow, not bad at all, although editing masks their true sound. those kids have 1000x more musical talent than i do, so i guess me and dream theater have that in common :p

My guess is that the piano girls were asked to play it, and DT isn't really their thing. They are probably the gf's of the guitar players. :p

Not a fan of that guys vocals (DT). The dude should be transported back to the 80's. Is unfortunate, because the music itself is really good.

So much processing in the vocal. She doesn't even have to do the skilled vibrato. The heavy echo/reverb make her sound nice.

Rest are amazing though.

Waiting for those douchebags from Metallica to sue the shit outta these kids and force them to pull down the video...

But that was a pretty damn good cover!

Love or hate the music -- but that's pretty damn good when you think of their ages, cover or not.

I heavily disagree. The instruments and vocals are technically and musically better than DT. Russel Allen is one of the greatest singers ever, and Romeo is a guitar playing god.

The only GOOD thing than La'Brie has ever done is on Ayreon's Human Equation, which I personally think is the best prog metal album of all time.

Also The Odyssey at 57? Are you kidding me?

Top 5 song. Easily.

Honestly, as a musician, I can say I have the utmost respect for SX. Russel Allen is amazing, and their musicians are top shelf.

But having been exposed to both group's catalogs, I have to say imho, DT is of a different caliber. This is in no way to downplay SX's skills, but older I get and the more I know about music (i can sight read, figure out what key a song is in within about 10 second, played cello growing up, and own about 15 guitars), I become to appreciate DT even more.

Are they my favorite style? Not really. I actually prefer to listen to SX. But I couldn't ever argue the 'who's better' debate in favor of SX.

i really like them both but would put SX above DT simply because LaBrie vocals

I'm the opposite...while I will agree that maybe there could be some morevariation in LaBrie vocals, he knows he can't so he really doesn't. You can see that they tried to fill that gap on the last few albums using Portney, but I didn't care for his either.

On the other hand I find the vocals in SX to sound..forced and fake and he just doesn't pull them off well...but thats just me.

There was a punk/power/metal band from Flint, MI in the 80s who were credited with being among the pioneers of speed/power metal. Several bands who later went-on to commercial success cited this band as an early influence on them. They were much bigger over in Germany or Netherlands than they were in the USA. I cannot remember the name of the band (it sucks getting old) but will post it if I can.

In an interview with some metal zine, the band members admitted how their speed/power metal style basically came about from a friendly competition/rivalry with another band. They would just try to out-do each other in terms of beat per minute, and also rhythm/key/tempo change-ups multiple times in the same song. IOW, it didn't come organically, it was to out-do what everyone else was doing.

Dream Theater's music has always struck me the same way. A few of their songs DID strike or appeal to me as 'organic' and soulful, but the rest just seemed like they were in some kind of complexity pissing match.

Maybe Thought Industry from Kalamazoo? Wouldn't describe them as power metal and their first album was released in 1992, but can't think of anything else from Michigan that could fit the bill.

Anyways, I like/love the first three Dream Theater albums, but everything since then has been extremely inconsistent. The playing was generally tasteful up to Awake, but albums like Six Degrees and Train of Thought are just so padded with instrumental masturbation. Fates Warning is my go-to progressive metal band.
