The kid should also know the difference between a fictional setting of "I rode in my time machine and killed a dinosaur" from "I bought a gun and shot my neighbors dinosaur." The kid is also old enough to know not to be a fuckhead about it afterwards, which it sounds like happened and he got arrested for it.
