Kia Rio

There's an ad for a Kia Rio near my city for $7000 brand new (after a discount and a rebate).

Granted, for sure it's a stick shift, CDplayer, AC, and nothing else. No power nothing.

But for a commuter car, isn't this a good deal? I'm considering selling my 93 Prelude and picking this thing up. After I graduate I plan on getting a different car, so it would only be a 2 year thing, at which point I'll either sell or give it to my little brother.

Thoughts?

$7K for a brand new car is a "decent" deal? Heh.

Sounds like a loss leader where there's only one and you'll never actually find one at that price. But it sure sounds like a great deal - a 10 year warranty with a decent ride. If you can find one at that price, buy it.

Just know what you're getting into. This is a KIA RIO, not a civic. IF you can get it for that much (which I doubt) you will have to live with driving around town in a RIO, bleh.

As was said before this may be a "loss-leader" car and only one may have been available. before you waste any more time considering this why don't you verify that the "deal" is actually available and is not just some smoke-and-mirrors dealer deception ... because we know that car dealers NEVER lie or try to rip off their customers, ha.

OK, having actually looked at one of these while bored at lunch one day. You are assuming to much by thinking it has a CDplayer and A/C. In Texas of all places they were selling these without A/C and only an AM/FM radio.

The base model rio doesn't have A/C or CD. Be weary. You usually need to get the next package up in this class of cars to get these. In looking around to the rio, accent, yaris, aveo, fit, etc. they all have base models without AC. These do not count as viable cars in the South. It may be that it is a demo model or a prev-year model that they need to get off the lot. Just check it out first. If it is as you say it is, go for it.

Ah yes, you guys are right, the base model has neither AC nor CD. Well, that venture is over.

I have plans to get a car at the end of summer, mainly because, well, mine just isn't dead yet. It runs fine save for the usual stuff that comes with a 93 vehicle. But I saw that and figured if it's that cheap, I could just get one now, even though I was looking more into getting a Versa.

Check out the Chevy Cobalt & Ford Focus.

Both have aboout $4K in discounts on them so you can get a model with AC & CD for about $11K or less.

PT Cruiser is also another great option. Should be able to find one for $12K.

I have a few friends that got in on similar deals. They are good for what you are paying for, as long as you go in knowing that they are decent fuel saver CHEAP cars.

you probably have to qualify for their:

$500 recent college grad rebate
$1000 kia loyalty rebate
$1000 women in small business rebate
$1000 vietnam war veteran rebate

and must finance entire cost of car through dealer @ 14.99% APR for 72 months to get that price.

When I was at the Kia dealer last month they had brand new 2006 models on the yard. Of course, that was the same dealership where the salesman gave us a businesscard with his name written on it and someone else's scratched off. To tell you the truth, just from a superficial look the Kia's they seemed incredibly flimsy and cheap construction.

The Hyundai Accent seemed to be a far better car.

OT: But I rented a PT Cruiser a little while ago. What a waste of money that thing is. Someone tell me the point of that car? No power, no options, minimal "trunk space".... good gas mileage, ok... but at a price you can buy a real car for?

About the same as the Chevy HHR though it was decently comfortable.

Chevy HHR is way better than PT cruiser IMO.

Top Gear magazine has this to say about the Rio:

"Alternatives: Anything else; Walking; A canoe."

That pretty much sums it up, and my Grandparents have one. It's a god-awful lump of crap.

I'd check out the PT Cruiser. I bought a leftover 2006 at the beginning of 2007 and have been really happy with it. Paid just over $10k for it. It's far from a class leader, but it's really reliable, has plenty of power with the 5spd, is comfortable, and can really do some hauling if needed - I fit a boxed 42" LCD in it! Only real downside is that they don't get very good gas mileage (oh, and the whole fugly thing).

I've never been in a PT Cruiser but the HHR was underwhelming in the power department. Otherwise it was a pretty decent car. If the price was low enough, I'd buy one.
