<< Read the Popular Mechanics from two months ago. It has a big section on NASA's Advanced Propulsion division, and they basically state that if they can find a source of negative energy (which according to Einstein SHOULD exist), they'll be able to warp space and create propulsion (ie- warp drive). Since the space around the theoretical vessel would be streched, the speed of light would be increased in relation to normal space, therefore incredible speeds could be reached while keeping inside the laws of physics. Uh, huh. And old issues of Popular Mechanics from the '50s said we would have flying cars and be living on the moon by now. While I'm only an armchair physics geek, at least I'm getting my information from sources like A Brief History of Time and Scientific American.
My extremely limited understanding of the concepts of string, super-string, silly-string, et. al are that if there are a multiplicity of dimensions that could be used for "folding" space, they would exist at such a sub-atomic level that people are never going to fit.
