just recieved this keyboard:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=170463

lovely, just what i wanted, one slight problem tho; i tested it in the office by typing in a URL into firefox (www.trustedreviews.com) and found that some of the letters had been output as numerals, e.g. www.tr4st7edr7vi7ws.c9m..........................!?!?!

this is a mini keyboard, and it is an english version described as fully compatible with XP, so why does it appear to be a completely different format such as dvorak for example?

is it because it is a mini notebook style keyboard, and if so, is there a setting i can change in XP to make the output match what i input?

thanks

specifically:

when the letter "U" is typed the numeral "4" appears,
and,
when the letter "I" is typed the numeral "5" appears.

is this characteristic or Dvorak keyboards?
is it characteristic QWERT notebook keyboards?
or what?

cheers

update:

it works properly when attached to my laptop, which leads me to presume that there must be some checkbox deep inside windows which says: [x] click here to use laptop keyboards which i presume that my laptop already have checked.

i'm off to try and hunt this setting down, but if anyone already knows please feel free to chime in.........

update no2 -

took the keyboard home, booted up computer.

it works fine in linux, just like my mouse yesterday.

so i try windows................ whereupon windows decides to have nothing to do with the new keyboard refusing to let me type in my logon password. just when i am about to give up hope, windows decides to start working with my new keyboard. just like my mouse problem yesterday.

bear in mind this is a relatively new, and clean install of windows, so i fear that must let out a rant:

FFS Micro$oft, get your effing act together! Truly you create the most excrebable of software ever to evacuate itself from the rectum of collective humanity!

grub wasn't too happy with my new keyboard either for some reason?

in the final part to this sorry saga of M$ woe:

using the keyboard with the PS2 dongle provides error free use!

so i'm left with two questions -

1) why is USB device support so much better in Linux than in windows
2) why does one XP PC exhibit problems with getting the correct output from the given input, where a second XP PC does not?

oh, and a third -
3) why does M$ suck monkey nuts?

over and out
