and your boss should prepare to get sued by this employee... just in case.

;)

For what? Monitoring company property? It's legal for them to do so.

Its been known to happen.

Show me one case that has been won...

Don't try to scare this guy about something that isn't illegal.

I think he's just making stuff up.

OP, ifyou want to monitor more than just keystrokes, consider something like Spectorsoft.

well, I know I'm not making this stuff up...

yes, if you must monitor, then you must do it company wide, otherwise, it is considered a form of discrimination and the company can be sued. so no, some people actually know what they're talking about on this board.

If you must monitor just one person, you must let them know you're monitoring them and have a reason why. Example: "I'm monitoring your computer because we picked up traces in the firewall log showing that your IP address has been going to myspace, visiting this site is clearly defined is the company acceptable usage policy as an unacceptable use of company equipment. Therefore we are placing a monitor on all incoming and outgoing traffic." This is a good example. A bad example is: "we're putting a monitor on your computer because your boss told us to."

You have to show them that you're not just monitoring them based on some sort of discrimination, but on some sort of misuse or illegal activity like looking at kiddy pr0n...

best practice is to monitor everyone and show in policy that it is being done.
