Keyless entry on car working erratically

Hey guys, maybe you can help me out. My '06 Subaru Impreza's keyless entry system started working erratically last month (sometimes it worked, other times I had to keep pressing the button forever) so I replaced the battery in the remote. No difference. I was originally thinking that there's a problem with the remote, but since replacing the battery didn't help maybe there's a short in the system itself?

Any ideas?

I was thinking it was that as well, but that wouldn't account for both buttons working simultaneously would it? Then all of a sudden it starts working again.

You didn't mention both buttons working simultaneously but usually as they wear out you start to have to press the buttons harder and harder until they stop working at all. I'm on my 3rd set of replacements, got 'em on Ebay for $5 shipped, for that price it's worth a shot..
