Keyless Door Locks? (Home)

edro

Lifer
I am thinking about getting one of those keyless door locks for my front or side door.

Most of the ones I see online look real cheap and I wouldn't really trust them.

Some take batteries (4 AAs) while others are purely mechanical.

Does anyone have one? What kind? Do you like it?

Thanks!

I don't have one but know I'd only get a purely mechanical one for fear of the batteries dying one day and locking me out.

I used to work for a security install company and you'd be amazed at how easily those magnetic locks can be bypassed. It would have to be a dead bolt type of lock and either purely mechanical or hard wired into the home with a battery back up in case the power goes out.

I'd like a lock on my front door that works like new fancy cars where you just keep a small device in your pocket and it automatically unlocks when you get nearby. Damn, that'd be great...

At the hospital, we use the mechanical ones for the pharmacy and such. Never had a problem.

We have a few mechanical ones at work, but I have never seen them used on a home front door before. 🙂

Those are all well and good, but a robber is going to get into your house the easiest way possible.

If the front door is too much of a pain, they'll try windows/back door.

We have one on our door coming in from the garage. I like it because the kids can let themselves in when they get home from school if for some reason we're not there. The remote will also turn the lights on in the house and open the garage door. There's a keypad on our garage that lets you do the same thing as the remote.

Yeah, so just leave your doors unlocked all the time.

The point of having a good lock it so they can't use your door. If they rob you, at least they will have to go through a window which means they can't take as much stuff and it would take them longer.

Also, I like the idea of not having to get your keys out each time when your hands are full of groceries or whatever.

Do you know what brand yours is? What model? Does it take batteries?

I'd go with a biomtric lock with deadbolt. It looks more like a normal lock thank anything else youve posted. I'm getting one for my apt door. Most have back up keys and batteries only need replacing once a year.

You usually get what you pay for with things like this. Go with a reputable company. Most all of them have standard metal keys as a backup if the batteries ever die, so don't worry about that.

I've been in the security industry for 8+ years now, and personally, I would not trust anything that was marketed for home security in the retail channel. I'd go with a real access control system.

My cousin and I setup a combo proximity / keypad reader outside his side garage door. Currently operates the garage door itself, but can be setup to secure the side door by installing a strike lock. I like maglocks, but if the power goes out, it's a real pain since battery power only lasts so long.
